Skiing in the Rain

I’ve skied in the rain over the years. Conditions are usually very good but visibility ann getting wet isn’t.
I watched Sunday River n Loon’s cams for a few minutes. SR’s 3 cams are close to their covered chairs Jordan n Barker. The 3rd has the Chondola (5/6 chairs then cabin) visible. I didn’t see anyone skiing and only one person on a Barker chair. Same true for Loon (near gondola), no one skiing and 1-2 in a cabin.
Loon only has the gondi running today.
They ain’t making money today.
Waterville is having a "Save the Snow Day"; they're closed.

I was famous once for skiing in the rain...back in the day:

I really wasn't skiing with an umbrella, the photographer asked if I would for the article. I had only recently learned to ski, and trying with an umbrella was...challenging.

Personally, I don't enjoy it - water always seems to have a way to enter in somewhere, and their are puddles on chairlift seats, etc. Wet snow falling is similar. Goggles also need constant wiping. But I do get the allure of having a mountain to yourself, soft snow, etc.

This rain is still sorely needed though to help alleviate drought conditions - this should make a dent in it.

I generally don't mind skiing in the rain. I am a pass holder at Wawa and it's only about 20 mins from my house so even in heavy rain I'll typically go out for 90 minutes or so which is about the limit of my gear keeping me dry. They were closed today (and yesterday) due to rain but otherwise I would have gotten some runs in.

I used an Indy day at WV in the rain last April and pretty much had the place to myself. I was on the mountain for about 3 hours and was soaked through but the conditions made it worth it. I kept getting to the base and saying ok one more run.

Drought help - GOOD

Increased waterflow rates in various streams/rivers that supply snowmaking ponds and may have had limits on withdrawing from them recently do to the draught conditions the last few months - GREAT!

I am firmly in the “don’t ski in the rain” camp. Afterwards for soft turns absolutely, but not if it’s actually raining. My favorite is skiing when it’s dumping snow.

Skiing in the rain has taught me to appreciate the following things...

#1 - there is a BIG difference between "water resistant" and "WATERPROOF" garments and accessories!!

#2 - the "ski-gee" hand held mini glorified wiper blade for your goggles (plus a rain-X wipe before heading out in the rain) is great

#3 - covered lifts are your friend in the rain

#4 - any day on the hill, is better than a day not on the hill!"

Nashoba was a great place to learn. I could see the ski area on our street, about a mile from our house. It was only about 10-12 min away from home. My parents would drop my brother and me off for lessons, or to ski on our own, while they enjoyed hanging out in the Outlook Restaurant.

I used to ski in the rain all the time as a kid at Brodie. January thaw could be brutal even back then.

When I was a kid and we went skiing, we skied no matter the weather as long as lifts were spinning. Now that I'm old(er), I no longer ski in the rain. Yes, the snow is soft, but I get plenty of days in now and I don't need to be damp and uncomfortable, which you still get even with full waterproof gear.

Years ago we had a large crowd at Mont St Anne and it started to pour. Everyone bailed out except my adult daughter and me. We had a blast until the clothing gave out.
