Best Ski Tracking App (free or paid)

Recently I discovered that my favorite ski tracking app, Trace, stopped displaying my previous ski days on the app. When I logged out and went back in, it didn't recognize me. The website still worked, but the app is no longer on the play store (at least publicly visible) and Trace seems to have made it "abandonware" as of last year per the comments on the download page. It was still working in March.

So, time to get a new app - what do you all use that's the best, in terms of not draining the battery, accurate tracing, vertical, etc?

I use Ski Tracks. It was 99 cents. Seems adequate enough. You don’t have to compete with anyone but yourself.

While Ski Tracks is good (and I still have it on my phone), it doesn't allow you to compare your numbers with those of other skiers using the app like TraceSnow used to do. The Snoww app allows that.

Have you used it and found it to work OK? It gets a miserable 1.4 stars in the play app store. With most reviews saying it consistently crashes. So I'm skeptical. Curious if you have better first-hand experience to offer.

I've used it twice and so far, no problems. (I run Ski Tracks simultaneously as backup and have a Mofi on the phone so that the battery lasts.)

I found that Snocru was the best but it’s now gone.

Skitracks works fine for me. Like the data it puts out and transposes onto Google. I used the in house Sugarbush tracking for a while but since I started to move around it made more sense to go to a generic one.

Skied at Loon today and tried several different apps since I always used to use Trace. Results:
- Trace: yup, it's dead!
- Snoww: crashed during my first run and then I could be ever get it even start again. This is consistent with must android reviews.
- Ski Tracks: Ran fine. Output is questionable and quirky (I'm sure I didn't ski a 67 degree slope at Loon. No social component if you care about that.
- Ski Tracker: Ran fine. Seems OK. Free version requires watching lots of ads. Maybe paid version is good. No social component if you care about that.
- Garmin/Strava: Ran my Garmin watch like i would normally do for biking. This never used to handle alpine skiing well but Strava has done a nice job adding that as an activity. This is probably what I'll stick with this season.

I've been using Ski Tracks for a couple of years and like it. I have no need for social spect or comparison. I will try my Garmin watch too next time to see how that works.

I use strava for biking, mt biking, hiking, you name it. Not surprised it worked well for skiing, too

I've used Strava for a long time for almost all activities. But downhill skiing was the one thing it didn't do well with because it counted lift rides as part of your 'effort'. It seems to have that figured out now which makes it a great option.

+1 for Ski Tracks for me. Paid the 99 cents a couple of years ago and have been happy ever since. I think it's a little bit off with it's elevation numbers, but as long as it's somewhat close, I'm happy. Also too, I fall into the group of not caring about competing against others for my stats. It's mostly just so I can see it an reflect on it later.

Today I used both Ski Tracks and Snoww simultaneously. Tracks credited me with a fairly accurate 850 vert., while Snoww credited me with 200 vertical - not good! (For a report, see the CM thread).

I was also a Trace user and enjoyed it even though it would occasionally crash. It was still working back in April when I had my last hike at Wachusett. I used it again on 11/20 and it was counting my runs accurately during my session but when I went to upload it at the end it gave me a message saying Upload Failed, Tap to Retry. I retried a few times but no luck and I figured it was a network issue as I didn't have great reception at the time. I tried again multiple times at home with great service and WiFi but still the same results. I attached a picture to my upload but I doubt that made any difference. I had noticed in the spring that when I attached pictures they would often not get uploaded but my stats would. I am in iPhone user and checked the App Store and it is no longer shown there.

That is good news about Garmin and Strava working well as I am frequent user of both for other activities but have never used it for snow tracking. I'll try that next time I get on snow.

Another I've seen mentioned is Slopes.
I'm able to log into my Trace account via the url but the leaderboard last update is 8/2020. I never used the app.

Thanks everybody for your advice - I may try a few this winter and see what works .Better save my info on the URL for Trace before it's gone for good!

I use Strava for all my activities (the free version). It does work well but it doesn't auto-pause on the chairlift rides. I've noticed that especially at the bike parks this summer.
It also doesn't have a skateboard activity. I have to use the inline skate as that's the closest.
