Mount Snow 2019-2020 Summer Fall

Took a trip up last weekend 8/17. Rode the BB up & walked down. Like last year, there's already some color in spots. They put the finishing touches on Carinthia Base Lodge. Finished the bar, stonework & landscaping. They still haven't done anything with the trees they fell last year. You can also see that the huge kickers they build over there are 95% snow. Bike operations are now from the main lodge not the Grand Summit. Down in the valley J'ville tasting room closed and the new Dot's has been framed for a Nov opening.

Well the old lodge is buried by the ego chair just below yardsale. You can pay your respects as you ski over it.

It will be interesting to see if the full vision for the "new" Carinthia is ever realized, as the sale of Peak Resorts to Vail may put an end to the real estate development plans. Vail makes it pretty clear that real estate is not their primary business. They tend to "shed" projects like that.

Agree.

The reality is that Vail will take a season or 2 to see what operations are like and how previous master plans fit with Vail's desire of resort operations, before we likely hear anything about potential future development at Carinthia.

Part of me thinks that they're going to eventually do something around the area where they old lodge used to be and they took all the trees down adjacent to the Glen Run Condos. That are just looks totally barren, and there is likely more $$ to be made in 1 way or another than just turning it into a larger preferred parking lot that is making them $$ maybe 15 weekends a year (just like the preferred parking lot(s) by the main base lodge

The old Carinthia lodge was the size of a tool shed. Not much material to move once demo'd.

I agree. Whether develop the master plan in any area will be interesting to see. Vail does like developing villages but they do like to partner up with their developments if they can. Especially if high-end resort chains are in involved. Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Vail are good examples. Of course some the other resorts had pre-existing villages already developed like Keystone, Northstar and Stowe (Spruce Peak). They have already said they intend to complete West Bowl at Sunapee at some point. Like there, I believe they will look at the current approved plans and make alterations to it and resubmit them for approval.

New Snowmaking pipe has been installed on Fools Gold over in Carinthia and the Moonwalk to Little Dipper to Moonbeam loop in Sunbrook! The last few lengths of pipe were being dragged up the hill by a bulldozer as I was just hiking this morning.

Based on where the lines were pulled, my hunch is some tree cutting, of maybe 20-25 ft along skiers left of that loop in Sunbrook will be happening soon

Also there's about 20 SMI Polecat fan guns stationed in the outer parking lot above where they parked the groomers this Summer.

They're not new fan guns, as the 3 control panels that had the plastic wrap pulled back all had between 1600 and 2300 hours on them.

Not sure if they're going to be installed at Mount Snow or shipped out laterally to another Peak (or potentially Vail??) Resort...

How far up Cascade did the fan guns go? Last week towards the top (but below Drifter) I noticed some power cables cut and on the ground. Looked like the plugs had been removed also.

Must have gotten a good deal on steel all of a sudden, that is a considerable amount of expansion without mention.

Upper Titanium is a no brainer, the Sunbrook choice is interesting. Why do you think they started with that combo instead of Big Dipper? Maybe because you can access Moon Walk from the Summit quite easily vs needing to ride the Sunbrook lift to get Big Dipper? Hold off on that until they get the new lift over there? Moon Beam is going to require some work, that run is tight.

I'll hike that side of the mountain tomorrow and check it out. Just a quick look a few minutes ago via my not so great telescope off my back deck up here has it looking like the fan guns from Cascade aren't there anymore, so maybe that's were they're from??

From having visually seen this morning, tower fan guns on parts of Long John, Canyon, Discovery, Exhibition, Cooper's Junction, The Gulch, Inferno, Nitro, Mineshaft and Ridge were still there, and via my telescope Snowdance is still lined with fanguns

I think you're correct about the choice and it being about easy Summit access.

They were mowing Big Dipper this morning. And a new, fairly sizeable valve station has been installed at the top of the Sunbrook Quad, immediately behind the unloading area, and it's easy to see that they tied the lines for the new Snowmaking terrain in Sunbrook to the existing system there.

Gotta go on a bit of a hunting expedition now to see if there significant quantities of new pipe, and a welding pop up tent, or maybe a shipment of new HKD's stationed somewhere down low on the Carinthia side now still.... Maybe, they're not done with things yet?? ;-)

Great for the Mount Snow regulars for sure - two good trails. You think Fools Gold/U Titanium will get features or remain regular? Or will those Mineshaft features move over there freeing that run up? Used to love ripping turns down that prior to park land lol.

going to be the contrarian here re. Big Dipper, I like that it's natural snow and not always open. When it is, it's a hoot. one of my all time favorite runs was through tall grass and narrow patches a couple years ago. There are very few specific runs down the mountain that I remember and I have two of them from Big Dipper.

Probably, but why? Very odd!

Also upon further, closer, review of some fuzzy pictures I took, it does appear that the fan guns that were on the pitch on Mineshaft are no longer there as well...

Reverting back to air/water on both runs perhaps... there was no such thing as an HKD Impulse when those polecats went in in '07!
