A bunch of my buddies all rode the Vermont Fifty mountain bike race last weekend so I took Monday off to recover. On the way down, Jeff and I stopped by magic to see if what was promised on the website was true or if Shawn had just gotten really good with photoshop.

The lodge is infact freshly painted. While we were there it was recieving some new shingles. The ski patrol building was also recieving some chimney point work and a paint job to match the lodge. The maintenance area has been cleaned up significantly and will no longer be such an eyesore from the lot.

All lifts have been sandblasted and primed. Towers will all be black with chair colors denoting lifts. Black chair will have black chairs, red chair will have red chairs and he Phoenix will have green chairs. The paint was already on site.

Shawn gave us a nice tour of the improvements, The upstairs bathrooms were just about done and look really nice! Jeff got to use the new ladies room! The downstairs bathrooms were also under renovation while we were there.

The phoenix received the rest of its concrete this week and may be the first lift to turn this season! The trails looked nice and trim and everything looked nice and neat!

Next we met Jim Sullivan, Magic's new majority owner. Jim is moving his law office into the lodge this week and will be onsite. I view this as a positive, as since his purchase he has made improvements happen fast. When I asked Jim what his goals were for the near future, he replied "To keep snow on those trails all winter and have a longer season." If mother nature cooperates, Jim hopes to open long before christmas for the first time in several years.

So it appears that many of the board's complaints have been addressed. This year it looks like one will be able to enjoy the mountain's unique terrain with clean improved skier services. Much needed lift painting is underway, so we can no longer boast about the slowest, longest, rustiest double chair in the east. Additional rental gear has been ordered. The other chair in the lot is planned to be installed as a beginner lift, eliminating the infamous handle tow and bringing lift access back to magic's beginner area.

I hope we get good snow because things were certainly happening at the mountain. I look forward to this season. Pics attached.

OG: Nice report. Hopefully, improvements will continue, "from A to Z".

If you look at magic's website this week there is a picture of the final concrete being poured for the lift. It is a used borvig that was originally the Betwixed lift at Stratton.

OG,

thanks for the update! It's giving me a little more hope for this season since i'm getting my pass there soon!

OT: did you race in the 50? if so, run or bike? I ask because I biked it again this year and had a TON of fun once again (although it did kick my butt again!)

I rode, beginner Clydesdale baby, first race in 6 years and loved every minute (um Hour actualy, 8:45 to be exact)of the pain, the rain, and the Harpoon hefe-weizen at the end! Most importantly we raised a ton of money for good folks at vermont ski adaptives, one of Vermont's most important ski programs.

Looks like some more phoenix pics on magic's frontpage, thanks Shawn! Any way you could make them clickable for a larger pic?

nice! It is a GREAT benefit for VASS, and a fun time to be had too! (My wife used to work for them-as did I-although unpaid!)
