Sounds like they still have good snow on the North Island.

White Christmas on slopes melts away

09.09.05 1.00pm
By Janna Hamilton
www.nzherald.co.nz

Hopes for a Christmas day spent hurtling down the ski slopes are being rapidly melted away as this year's record warm temperatures and sunshine hours are closing the ski fields early.

Mount Ruapehu sales and marketing manager Mike Smith said he doubted they would remain open after early November - last year people were skiing on Christmas day.

He said the snow base on the mountain's Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields resembled the middle of October, not early September -- a result of the nation's fourth warmest August on record.

"But we're hanging in there better than our mates down south," he said. "[Mount] Ruapehu is pretty exposed so we tend to get more snow than Coronet [Peak] or Mt Hutt, and we are a little bit higher in altitude too."

Whakapapa has a snow base of 155cm and Turoa 165cm, compared with Coronet Peak (55cm) and Mt Hutt (25cm).

Mr Smith said no snow had fallen in the past two weeks, but the lack of snowfall was not scaring off the skiers and so far it was a good season for the books, especially at Turoa.

Turoa skier numbers are ahead of this time last year, and 2004 was a record year since the field opened in 1978.

"We've had unbelievable stretches of fine weather -- if it's going to be warm and not going to snow, it may as well be sunny," he said. "But it has been hard to keep [enough snow on the] lower part of the mountain for beginners."

Nzski.com (Mt Hutt, Coronet Peak and Remarkables ski fields) sales and marketing manager David Ovendale agreed that mother nature has needed a helping hand this season.

"Thanks to snow-making machines and snow farming (catching snow and moving it to lower levels) hard work has resulted in the groomed trails being pretty good throughout the winter"

Mr Ovendale said the lack of deep snow on the higher slopes, which more advanced skiers enjoy, did not worry 70 per cent of the ski market.

"[They] don't really give a damn if they're not knee-deep in the back bowls - they don't have any intention of going anywhere near there."

But he said business had been a struggle this year, especially for their Canterbury field, Mt Hutt.

"We've had continued warm temperatures and rain, and the implications of rain on a thin and somewhat soft snow pack is not good for business," he said.

"To get a sense of the magnitude of the drought, the average snowfall for Canterbury (recorded in eight-year intervals) is 387cm -- this year Mt Hutt has had just over 80cm."

If the next few days bring hard rain to Mt Hutt or Coronet Peak, they could possibly close this weekend. But Mr Ovendale said the Remarkables in Queenstown, Central Otago, is still in good condition, "so international skiers coming to this part of the world will still have skiing at their doorstep".

The national alpine ski-racing championships were scheduled to run at Cardrona ski field, in Central Otago today, but have been moved north to Turoa and rescheduled for September 14-16.

Ski fields that have closed in the South Island for this season are Rainbow, Hanmer Springs, Temple Basin, Mt Olympus and Fox Peak.

Bad times. Closing this weekend would be the equivalent of a Northern Hemisphere close of about March 10.

Skifield season may finish early

By Susan Sandys
Mt Hutt Ski Area may be forced to shut up shop early this year, with snow cover getting worse by the day in warm and windy conditions.
Skifield manager David Wilson said the weather had been warm and windy, and staff were monitoring the snowbase daily.
“The scheduled closing date was the 17th of October and without anymore snow we would not really get through to that,” he said.
The snow cover this year was the lowest for at least 15 years, with just 80 centimetres having fallen on the mountain.
Mr Wilson said in an average year about 4.5 metres of snow fell on the mountain, and the previous lowest fall had been some two metres in 1998.
The snowbase, usually at least a metre by September, was now just 25 centimetres.
Mt Hutt is owned, along with Coronet Peak and the Remarkables, by Southern Alpine Recreation Limited, which purchased the skifields in June 2002.
Mr Wilson said the southern skifields had received more snow than Mt Hutt, but had also been down on average cover.
“Everyone has been hit by it really,” he said.
He said the poor ski season would naturally lead to a tightening of finances spent on skifield improvements over summer, although summer maintenance would continue as normal.
He said while snow cover was low, the number of skiers visiting had been quite good considering, just 15 per cent down on last year when almost three metres of snow fell throughout the season.
The stable weather with few snowfalls had meant fewer closed days, and the $7.5 million improvements to the skifield had opened up more terrain.
“The way the mountain operates means the response from people has been really positive,” he said.
Southern Cross Ski Hotel operator Leo Corry said the lack of snow this week had seen a loss of $10,000 in bookings for the hotel after New Zealand senior and junior ski teams had cancelled.
The New Zealand national championships had been transferred to other ski areas, and this was the worst season he had known in the 15 years he had managed the hotel.
“And by all accounts it’s the worst season since 1988,” he said.
Brinkley Village recently saw the American ski team cancel its booking and go to train in Chile instead, where there is plenty of snow.
Manager David Boles de Boer said today he had no comment, except to say “it’s a shitty season, end of story”.

Dearth of snow ends ski season @ Coronet Peak, New Zealand.
10 September 2005
By ROWAN QUINN
www.stuff.co.nz

Coronet Peak skifield would close for the season tomorrow night after a "disgustingly" warm spring, nzski.com director Duncan Smith said yesterday.

The field, which is already restricted to trails-only skiing, would probably have lost the bottom few metres of snow by tomorrow, Mr Smith said.

He could not believe how warm the winter had been.

"I've never seen anything like it."

Arthurs Point weather enthusiast David Crow said his records showed August had been the warmest for Queenstown.

Mr Smith said Coronet Peak would open again if a significant amount of snow fell this month.

"In 2003, Coronet Peak had 91cm (of snow) in September and about 80cm last year," he said.

Other skifields said yesterday they were better off.

The Remarkables was looking as though it could stay open until at least the end of September, Mr Smith said.

Cardrona ski area manager Andy Chapman said skiers were enjoying good spring conditions on the mountain.

The planned closing date was October 9.

Treble Cone was boasting the best conditions in the South Island.

Manager Jackie van der Voort said 20cm of snow had fallen this week. The planned closing date was October 19.

Snow needed to lift skifields
10 September 2005
By MIKE CREAN
www.stuff.co.nz

Only heavy snow next week can rescue South Island skifields from a dismal season that has forced many to close early.

The skifields are hoping for a rerun of 2003's weather pattern, which featured a big dump of snow on September 12 to revive what had been a disappointing ski season.

Canterbury Snow Sports' Association spokeswoman Jane Clifford said warm temperatures and rain had wrecked skiing for much of this season. "Overall, the season has been terrible," she said.

Last year had been a "bumper" season, enabling skifields to ride out this year's weather. She hoped the cyclical nature of the weather would bring good skiing next year.

Most skifields from Mount Lyford in the north to Ohau in the south had closed by yesterday, but would reopen next week if sufficient snow fell.

Mount Hutt was open yesterday, with an average snow base of 25cm.

Porter Heights spokesman Uli Dinsenbacher said the weather was unusual.

AdvertisementAdvertisement"It is very unseasonal. I have never seen it like this so early. This is October weather – no frosts and warm temperatures in the day," he said.

"The freezing level is over 2000m. We're fairly philosophical about it. You can't do much about the weather."

If snow did not fall in the next few days, Porter Heights would have to decide whether to close for the season.

Ohau, which is usually open later than most fields, was closed for the weekend.

Spokeswoman Marion Battishall said a good snowfall in mid-August had been a boon. She was hoping for more snow soon.

Southern Alpine Recreation managing director Duncan Smith said the Remarkables field, which was at a high altitude, was "looking good", and might stay open until the end of the month. It stood to gain from an influx of Australian skiers as school holidays in Australia began yesterday.

Coronet Peak would have difficulty staying open after the weekend without a big weather change, he said.

National ski-racing teams, which had been training there, had left.

The 20cm snow base was getting softer each day.

Coronet Peak Season Draws to an Early Close

Recent record warm temperatures, sunny days and occasional rain have heralded the early arrival of spring to the mountain and Coronet Peak will close for the season from Monday 12 September 2005.

“ While the last three weeks of warm weather and soft spring snow has been very enjoyable, the below average snowpack has not been deep enough to survive the weather.” said Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager Duncan Smith

“ Regrettably, despite the best efforts of our snowmaking and grooming crews, Coronet Peak no longer has sufficient snow to operate. We will however consider reopening if the weather returns to a more normal pattern and there is some significant snowfall.”

“ While this early windup to our season at Coronet is very disappointing for our customers and staff we are pleased that The Remarkables still has good snow-cover and conditions, so the season is far from over.”

The Remarkables Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie is confident that the current snow conditions and altitude at The Remarkables means there will be good spring skiing until at least the end of September.

The 91 day Coronet Peak season opened on June 11 and will close at 4pm on Sunday September 11.

“ Despite below average snowfalls this year, overall it was a pretty good season. For the majority of the winter we enjoyed good snow conditions and mild weather with lots of sun and no closed days.”
