I was reading through the latest issue of Ski, and I was surprised to see some of the ratings. The biggest surprise was Holiday Valley, however I have never skied there, so I can't really comment too much. I also wasn't expecting Hunter to make the Top 20 list, as number 20 overall. Don't get me wrong, I like Hunter, but I didn't think it had enough pull to get the votes.
I was also surprised to see Elk on the top 10 lists (not overall top 10)for snow quality, grooming, and value, but I feel it's well deserved. Elk and Hunter are two (out of three) "local" mountains that I like to go to. I go to Elk and Plattekill on the weekends and Hunter when I can go during the week.
So what's everyone's thoughts on this year's rankings? For those who don't have the magazine, the overall top 10 ratings are below:
1. Tremblant
2. Stowe
3. Holiday Valley
4. Killington
5. Sugarloaf
6. Loon
7. Whiteface
8. Stratton
9. Bretton Woods
10. Sunday River

Well, without knowing the criteria its hard to really say exactly what are the top resorts. Also, who is judging? Is this a readers' poll. If so, isn't it more of a popularity contest.
I haven't been to all ten on the list, but my top ten would certainly be quite different. I'd say only about 4... perhaps 5 of these would make my top 10. But I need to ski all of the resorts in the east to make a really educated top 10 list. I think its also difficult to determine a "top 10". As we all know by reading this board, what is important to one skier might be irrelevant for another.

I noticed that Magic was in alot of post here as an east fav. Ski it as much as possible this year, from what I here this is a crucial year to its existance.

I'd bet that Stowe would be the only area that everyone on this panel would agree should be in the top 10.

Sorry. I think that Stratton and Tremblant should be there.

Oh, I'm not saying that Stratton and Treblant don't belong in the top 10. Just that every single person on this panel wouldn't vote for those two areas.

It is a reader's poll, so yes, it is a just a popularity contest. I'm just surprised with some of the ratings, even with keeping that in mind.

Perhaps Sugarloaf also. As for Stowe, yeah, it would make my top 10. Must get back there one of these years.

For the die-hard easterner (such as me), I was disappointed to notice that SKI gave the top 30 western resorts but only the top 10 eastern ones (unless you are in the region of the country that receive the "E" supplement, in which case, we got to see 11 thru 20.)
My suspicion is that based on the cross-section of posters on this list, we would probably overweight the parameters such as challenge, snow quality/quantity, etc. and underweight some of the other categories such as grooming, food, etc.
For the most part, I think the magazine got it right on "challenge" with MRG coming out on top again.

It is a
readers poll" which translates to a resort's guests's poll. Which is the reason these areas exist. Holiday Valley has over 500,000 skier/rider visits a season.
