Johannesburg, South Africa - The first snow of winter came down on Tuesday in the mountainous southeast where the country's only ski resort was open for guests.
"We have reports of light snow falling in the country's high-lying southern Drakensberg area, extending into the Stormberg," said a weather service spokesperson.
The high southeastern regions, where South Africa's only ski resort Tiffindell is situated, usually get snow every year.
Liza Schroeder, a receptionist at the resort, told AFP that snow fell overnight on the province's highest mountain Ben McDhui, about 3 000m above sea level.
"We have quite a few guests who has booked in. People are out on the ski slopes" she said.
The weather service said it expected the cold conditions to remain until the weekend.
