Best SKI Resort in the EAST

I don't understand why anyone would drive past a ski experience of that quality to go to more northern resorts, there is just no reason to. __________ FAIG

So, I propose that most Killington skiers must like unimaginative terrain, crowded slopes, high prices, lift lines, and a smelly gross lodge. Either that, or most people who swear by Killington probably haven't skied elsewhere enough to realize that there are better alternatives. Of course, this is my opinion ... lets not all get our panties in a bunch over this because we all rank ski areas differently. I personally believe that Jay is far better than k-mart ... Burke too for that matter. In New Hampshire, Cannon takes the crown. I guess it comes down to a skier's own tastes and preferences. However, I'll hold to my opinion that most Killington skiers simply don't know any better. __________ SnowJournal.com

Posted: Feb 18, 2004 - 6:49 PM GMT Well I really enjoy several New England resorts. I am not one to say this place is better than that. IMO the best place to ski/ride is where you enjoy the people, sites and food, and has terrain that you are comfortable on. The place that you ski/ride the most, is probably the best to you. For me, the places I frequent are Sunday River and Sugarloaf. I know these two "like the back of my hand" but I am not saying they are better or worse than another place. __________ If you french fry when you shoulda pizza'd, you're gonna have a bad time.

Stowe comes to mind, with good skiing and a long New England tradition. But the Mountain Road is something of a strip mall, IMO. The last time I was at Killington the buildings seemed run down and needing care and the area around the base lodge seemed dirty and messy. There's plenty of skiing there, though. My nomination for the best ski mountain in New England is Sugarloaf. Great variety of trails, nice atmosphere, a lift-served snow field and a long season. Can't beat that.

There is just so much room to explore at these mountains. There are hardly ever any lines, and there is just so much room to explore off piste skiing. I mean Cannon has mittersill that you can hike to in just 3 minutes, so basically it is two ski areas, one groomed (except for the likes of tramline and kinsman) and the other totally natural. As for jay there are just so many glades that it is easy to get fresh snow almost every run. I tend to judge my ski areas by their character and ability to offer interesting terrain. Some ski areas just dont have that interesting quailities. They may have 200 runs, but if 75% of the runs look and feel the same then they really dont have anything interesting. With a place like Jay or Cannon, each run is very different, with huge amounts of unused terrain that can be explored as well. During good snow years there are many ski area that match this criteria and in lean snow years there are few. Tons of natural snow. 3000 foot vertical. Site of TWO Winter Olympics. And nearby Saranac Lake has an ice castle built out of refrigerator sized blocks of ice. Waterville Valley, with it's World Cup trail is a close second, but much smaller. I ski at Hunter only because it's close enough for me to ski 3 times a week. 1600' vertical is pathetic. 8 minutes up on the high speed quad; 2 minutes down. 6 runs an hour is equivalent to a light workout in a gym, but at least it's on the side of a mountain, with a nice view. __________ Step on no pets

I guess that a mid- station makes one lift two. please the best in the east is either Stowe or Canon they have True New England Terrain. without the snobs
