I was reading about the "oldest Ski Lodge in america" and I know of one in WA that is OLDER. The one in the article was built in 1938 and the American River Ski Bowl Lodge was built by the CCC in 1935 and is still used to this day. There are no more ski lifts at the site, but the lodge is still there and is the most rented facility by the forest service I read somewhere.
Pictures and info. are on the Lost Ski Areas of WA. site.

... It might have been the oldest ski lodge, were there ski ski lifts still in operation. Now, it's probably able to claim the title "oldest FORMER ski lodge in america". I think Middlebury's claim on the title is legit.

The article says nothing about lifts, but just states "oldest ski lodge". The American River Lodge is still a Ski Lodge, was built as one and is still used year-round.
I'll be doing some investigating on this one....it has me now wondering. I'll shoot an email to the people at the college and ask.
I received an email from David at Middlebury, VT and he said they were referring to only "active" ski areas on the dedication. (probably should be mentioned in the article) so that would take the American River Lodge out of the picture.
I did mention to him that there is a small ski area here in WA called Meany that is still in operation with 2 rope tows and their ski lodge was built in 1928 and is the oldest of the Mountaineers ski facilities still running. Access to it is by snow-cat or hiking.
The Leavenworth Ski Hill Lodge was built in 1936 and has been used every year since then and the ski hill still runs with 2 lifts. The large ski jump hill has not been used since 1978 but the small ski jump hill was redone and is back in operation. The lodge is basically unchanged from when it was built and is much larger then the Middlebury one. The folks at Middlebury should have done more research before they lay claim to the oldest base lodge in the country since it seems there are still a few others around that are older.
