As we look ahead to the 2003/2004 season, we can anticipate more growth toward Mittersill, as seen on Cannon's trail map. The new trails look like a series of low elevation trails. Will this be a new beginner area? [addsig]
one day while skiing mittersill this past year, i skied straight through barron's on purpose and missed the turn off to explore the new beginner area. the trails are AWESOME! they are all easy beginner pitch, so no challenge at all. but trail design is super cool. they are fairly narrow for beginner trails without being intimidating and have a very open woodsy kinda feel with tree branches still hanging over the trail above. really well designed. the trails are cut, they just need snow making and a lift which i assume is going in this summer. should be an awesome place to take someone to learn (that's a first, me recommending cannon for a first time skier!).
* * * WARNING: RUMORS AHEAD * * *
while riding the cannonball quad this year, i was riding with some people who worked at cannon and the topic of mittersill came up. the employee said that she heard cannon was going to concentrate on improving their existing facilities (summit building, peabody base lodge, etc) before starting the mittersill expansion proper. from what she said, i'd say it'll probably be AT LEAST 2-3 years before mittersill is lift serviced again. so dig in while you can![addsig]
The HUGE STEEP glade has been skied for many years, It is part of the Kinsmen Ridge hiking trail, I think I was told they are planning on going in there and clearing some of it this summer. I know the hiking trail needs some help.
I also have heard the same thing about the mittersill expansion, they have plans to expand the old peabody building, will that make it the new-old peabody? Plus they would need to put something in at the base over there for warming and concessions first.
I also don't think they will be ever to buy the top from the national forest service, so if it does reopen some day it will be set-up differently.

I know that lifts will eventually we put in on Mittersill, but:
Question 1:
How will beginners access these new trails that RiverCoil talked about, which are supposed to be "ready" for 2003-2004? Or will they just be there as a treat (at least for the next few years) for those who hiked over from Cannon?
Question 2:
Is there any possibility to develop that big blank spot on the map between Mittersill and Cannon (to the skier's left of Hardscrabble)? Is that south-facing or just not in the cards for a particular reason?

It's east-facing, but I would guess it's just too steep for all but extreme skiers, as steep as the tramline area. Does anybody poach it?[addsig]
referrence the above development plan to see where the planned lifts will go. the lift with the smiley face on it (labelled as Children's Adventure Park on the map) will access the new slopes and a way to get back to the current learners area. so skiers would leave the lodge and ski downhill right away, then take a lift back up since most of the new terrain is below the peabody lodge (elevation wise).
regarding the undeveloped area on jackson mountain's east flank, i would be VERY surprised if locals haven't cut some insane trails through the woods. judging from the above map, the topo indicates it would be fairly steep terrain (not worse than the tramline though it seems), but skiable for upper level experts. looks like it was WMNF land though, i don't know if that was included in the land swap or not. probably not an area considered for future development i'd guess, but you can't help but notice it when riding up the HSQ.[addsig]
Forgive this dumb question, but are lifts G, F, and the lifts to the left of G currently in operation as of last season? Or is this the new beginner area?
Or is the new area you're speaking about highlighted in yellow to the right of the above mentioned area?[addsig]

All of the lifts on that trail map are in place and operational. To the right of lifts G and F, highlighted in yellow, are the new beginner trails on Mittersil. These were cut last summer along with the new tramline trail. Lift service is supposed to be installed this summer, but we have yet to confirm that. The beginners area expansion is the first step toward making a full connection with mittersil.

Skiable lines do exist in this area, but no one should consider going in unguided. Even so, the skiing is tight and very steep in spots with no bailout traversing once you're in. The area directly above Middle Hardscrabble is cut off by cliffs. Strong technical skills and good aerobic conditioning are definately required for that which can be skied. This is not a place to go exploring![addsig]
good way to put it cubco. I was wondering how to approach that question. That area is definatly dangerous. have someone who knows the area take you through.[addsig]
Im guessing that face would get major orotion (bad spelling) if they cut trails. would be nice to have ski guides from cannon take people in for a fee.[addsig]
