Snowing heavily according to Beech's live web cams, with about 6 inches accumulation already at the summit.

http://www.beechalpen.com/live_web_camera.html

If that page won't load try this one:

http://www.beechmountainresort.com/mountain/parkway_cam.html

Snowshoe expected to get 2 feet, but the %$##@ resort has no webcam.

Where I live, at low elevation, we have wind warnings and mixed snow and rain, but nothing serious.

historically speaking, that is more than enough to open sugar. in fact, they say they will be open Wednesday, their earliest ever.

Their website also states, "snowmaking in progress".

Really?

I went to the Snoeshoe webcam and it shows guns going and it is snowing. On their FB page people are asking about the resort opening but the resort has only commented about other issues, ignoring the questions about opening. I suspect they and other resorts in the region are doing a cost/benefit looksee at the numbers regarding the big question of opening yhis week.

While the next 7 days the temps at Snoshoe are definately winter like, starting this weekend they get back to a more normal temp range which means the snow would be gone and a stop in snomaking. It will be interesting to see which resorts in this region throw fiscal caution to the wind and open up for maybe a week or so then possibly have to shut down.

Here in Vermont many resorts are hoping to fire up the guns around Nov 1st for a Sat before Thanksgiving opening. I doubt that will happen looking at the forward temps.

If you can find a Snowshoe resort webcam, you are a lot better than me!

Typically the only webcam Snowshoe has is a security camera from one of the shops in the village that gives you a peek of the top of the lifts on a good day. Other days it shows a set of doors. Not making this up. Has anything changed?

However, their Facebook page does show snow falling and snow making, you are correct

oh hell, that is now way more than enough to open sugar 100%. bring the rock skis. probably charge holiday level fares as well.

looks like the temp is still dropping - more of the roads are covered.

And, while Snowshoe could technically open with just the Skidder and Grabhammer lifts, they don't ever do it either early or late. Just not enough business at that level I believe.

Sugars cam at 508 pm. The lens is wet with rain drops. Not good. The SMI Wizzard in the base area is sitting quiet. A big water swall is at the base of the run. It is getting white, however. They will need some less humidty tonight to get anything down. Its at 24 now(so they say)
and the gun is off. They can open on minimal cover on Upper and Lower Flying Mile, what they will make snow on. Even with two feet of wet natural snow, they will still need some machine made piles to spread around.
On another note- Alot of areas from the Banana Belt to Maine are just not ready to open on Halloween. No matter how much natural they get. Most places havent got the tracks on the cats yet. Let alone the plow on the truck to clear the parking lot. All the snow is good hype. It will help to sell season passes. Im just wondering how many people will call a resort after the strorm. They will ask when are you planing to open? Then be sad to hear a mad response of someone grumbling not until December!

Was in Boone last week, busy college town. The Blue Ridge parkway rivaled the best rides I've ever taken. The Smokies are awesome, just delete the PF, Gat thing. Not a hint of wind at Clingmans Dome and 75 degrees.

For the biologists / tree experts, why don't they have much red foliage in the south?

I don't even play one on tv, but the reds and bright oranges are sugar maples. Think maple syrup country.

Let's hope this storm doesn't bode for another season like last year's Halloween storm did. Think snow!

Brushed snow off my windshield this morning! First time since early March.

That was good enough for me.

Unfortunately, with all the hurricane's deaths, damage, and 7 million people without power, it was tough to enjoy this first snow of the season.

And Snowshoe is not Plattekill, with a small local staff, that was able to open the slopes last Halloween after 3 feet of snow.

As Newman noted, it has a lot of infrastructure that needs to be together to open, not to mention the Intrawest employees they fly in from resorts out west and even other parts of the world, who then work the shops and restaurants.

I have never seen Snowshoe open without the Village open, and with just one or two lifts. Could they do it? Possibly, they have just never done it before under Intrawest ownership.

I went back to check out the resorts in the mid-App area and I think I confused SnowShoe with Sugar Mtn.

I wouldn't even try to get through West Virginia: roads bad, power out, and as stated above, Snowshoe does not have the staff brought in yet to open this week. However....

From Sugar Mtn NC website:

Sugar Mountain Ski Resort will open on Halloween, Wednesday, October 31 for skiing and snowboarding. In its 43 year history, Sugar Mountain Resort’s earliest opening was on November 5th in 1976.

Over seven inches of natural snow have fallen already. Snow continues while temperatures are forecasted to remain in the low to mid-twenties through Wednesday. A total of 10 to 16 inches expected from Sandy by afternoon.

Snowmaking began Sunday evening, October 28th and continues around the clock. On Wednesday, skiers and snowboarders can expect a natural and manmade powder surface covering the Upper and Lower Flying Mile slopes. The Summit #1 Lift will be in operation to the ¾’s station. For a real time look at the slopes through the live, streaming web cam please log on to www.skisugar.com/sugarlive.

What?
The sugar maples are a golden yellow laced with lime. Some oaks are red, some a dark red. Poison Ivy is red. Aspens or Poplars are also yellow. Sassafras is a orange or yellow. On the cape here, we have white oaks which are the color of shit. It's the red oaks of Northern N.e. and Ma. that make for a much better mix.
