Drove by Maple Valley on VT Route 30 on the way home from camping Monday and there were chairs on the lift and the place looked pretty cleaned up.
What's going on, any locals have any updates?

The owner of Maple Valley had applied with Dummerston's Development Review Board in June of 2011. The town pretty much shot him down on re-opening and he formally withdrew the application in December 2011.

To be fair, in articles about it, he seemed very vague about his summer plans and I don't think he could answer questions about them when asked by the planning board.
It's been reported that although the chairs were painted, the paint is very thick and poorly done, AND moving parts of the motor were painted over making operation virtually impossible.

It would take a committed plan and financial backing to make it happen. I think the town would approve it if the right plan was presented in the right way.

It was impossible before the paint.

FWIW, Crotched brought back 1/2 Halls and Big Tupper brought back 2/3 Halls (and it's only 2/3 as the third has been made redundant with Chair 3 to the top), and Maple Valley has been closed fewer years than either of those two.

obienick incorrectly stated: Quote:

Crotched's 5 lifts, 4 chairs and a Magic Carpet, have only one lift, the West Double, that could loosely be considered a Hall. But even that lift is a mixture of Hall and CTEC parts.

I think Obienick was saying 'one out of two' Halls were brought back at Crotched West.

There is a pile of snowmaking pipe on the slope next to the side road and logging equipment!

What kind of logging equipment? Is the pipe new-looking or old?
I very well can imagine the owner, after withdrawing his permit application, sell what's left for scrap. A lot of times pipe is dragged with a skidder. Any reopening would utilize new pipe with a larger diameter. A larger diameter decreases friction loss of head, as well as allow higher pumping rates allowing quicker openings. New higher pressure pipe often has Teflon-coated insides to further decrease friction loss.
Also, doesn't a row of houses parallel the trail far skiers' left? Could pipe be for that?

There is a street off to the left but I'd say the pipe is coming off the mountain since it looks to be older! If I remember correctly there was a skidder and a small excavator. There may have also been logs in that area but that part is rusty in my head!

Wondering if anyone has been touring up on Maple Valley in recent years and if the trails are clear enough for a decent descent when there's some snow on the ground. Might be moving down to Southern VT this winter and looking for some unique touring options. Plus I have such great memories growing up at Maple Valley that it'd be a real treat to ski Buckeroo Bonzai again

Someone posted photos from a recent hike in the other Maple Valley thread. I recall decently-sized saplings, big enough to be growing within the lifts. Unfortunately it may not be skiable at this time, but there were reports of skidders this summer.

i skied it in 2010 i don't remember the trail name but skinned up the beginner trail and then skied down one of the blue trails that came out to the old race slope. lots of water bars that despite all the snow and cold were un- frozen. I had optimal conditions it had rained a week before then new snow fell ontop of it so there was a good base. lots of good size pines and saplings but nothing you cant ski around

Hopefully one of you fellas will ski or hike it soon and give us a report. I love reading this kind of thing. The chances that I do it are slim, unfortunately.
