It's that time of the year again and I'm sure you all are thinking what I'm thinking. When will the snow start to fall?
Anyone got any grand trips planned for the upcoming season.
Personally I'm planning on taking the hike up to Mont Tremblanet 12/19 - 12/23 pending some snow fall of course....

Well don't root for a really early storm like last year! I've never experienced a great winter when there was a major snow storm before mid-November!

Not true. In the winter of 05/06 it dumped the first week of Dec. And the season went on until Mid April.
I remember becuase my high school ski team was supposed to go on our annual trip friday, saturday, sunday and it snowed so hard that we conviced the super intendent to allow us to leave on saturday and return monday evening.
It was also my birthday.....

To kappcity: A little calendar update: First week of Decmber is three weeks after Mid-November!
There is also a false memory associated with 2005-6. Late in the season, our ski school director apologized for not suspending clinics to enjoy the powder that first week of December, because he agreed that WAS the best powder day of the season.
From the thread http://www.snowjournal.com/page.php?cid=topic18506 that season was rated 11th of the last 13 seasons. The summary read:
2005-6: decent start with some snow and cold temps, x-mas week was a washout and March was almost completely snow-less.

November of 1998 saw Killington receive a 36" dump on Thanksgiving weekend. The rest of the season was okay, nothing awful or stellar.

To sugarloaf: A little calendar update: Thanksgiving is about 10 days after Mid-November!
And I thought in my earlier posting that only kappcity06 needed the calendar lesson!

2005-06 was a good year south of Manchester, NH. Seems Boston and Connecticut got way more snow than us folks in NH. So I don't think kapp is remembering incorrectly its just his skewed NJ perception. What do they say, "Perception is reality"?

I think that you might be thinking of 2009-10.

They had walk up skiing on the Sugar Slope one year on April 1st. All the Creek skiers on April 16 were at Hunters closing day.

Perhaps we need a definition of "early seaon dump". I defined it as before November 15. By late November, sustained temperatures in the snow making range become tenable, which is why Thanksgiving has become a major skiing weekend, whereas in the pre-snowmaking world, even Christmas was no guarantee.

This is true, but November is still early season and alot of ski areas still do not open until December 1st, especially the lower elevation areas. Thanksgiving is still a toss up as to if colder weather cooperates to allow for snowmaking and for more than a handful of trails to be opened. The average Joe skier is not out on the slopes until Christmas.

I think Thanksgiving WAS a major ski weekend, particularly in the 80's. But not so much anymore, even out west...............

I remember in the 80s when Turkey Weekend was a big thing in the Catskills. Even the smaller areas tried to (or did) get a run open. Now Hunter has not made snow until Dec, in the last few years. Alot of areas still try for late Nov, but the weather has not been what it was in the 80s. These days, K-Marts stairway cant even promise late Nov hotel bookings anymore.

While I think (actually know) your right I think economics have more to do with the shorter seasons then weather. I remember skiing Hunter early November and late April but there weren't a whole lot of us around and I just think the mountains have decided its not worth it. Last year October storm was a fluke. According to sources I follow it really didn't have anything to do with the reasons we had a warm winter. (we were really the only place that did as Europe and Asia and especially Alaska got wacked) This year is supposed to be different. Back in the late 70's when I was in Central NH we had a year where every home football game from late Sept into November had snow in the air or on the ground. 77-78 I think it was and we were skiing Whaleback (all natural) from Thanksgiving on and most would remember the blizzard that closed Boston for a week that February. There are just not enough of us that are avid enough to support the shoulder seasons.

I think the early demand is there, bit it can be a bigger risk to open early and hold good cover. As for spring, the areas can just hope to keep what they have. I think the spring season has much less intrest now, as it did years ago. I do remember huge crouds on Upper Cascade, with a 25 minute line to upload the mid station of the Killington Peak Double. That was October, when they spent money to be the first open. Im sure some SJers were part of that scene.

While I'm ready to hit the slopes when the first area opens in the Mid-Atlantic, I figure that any lift-served skiing here before December 15 or after March 15 is gravy.
But I do get terribly grumpy if I don't make first turns by December 15.

That's just because it means you missed the Wisp B-day party and didn't get cake!

Looks like the Magic 8 Ball is predicting a good winter: http://news.yahoo.com/snow-august-steamy-now-forecasters-see-big-winter-173109124.html
I'll hope they're right.
