In college I puchased a 5 lb CO2 tank, the regulator, the lines, the tap, drip pan from a place that services bars (http://www.carbonicsales.com), and fashioned them to an old mini fridge myself. You could fit a 1/2 barrel and the tank inside.

The equipment cost me about $250, in 2000.

My friends and I did a keg of microbrew IPA for a bbq which was $120 + $80 deposit, and simply kept ice on it to keep the beer cool. For reference, a keg (or half barrel) is 124 pints and you have to return the keg in 48 hours to get your deposit. Let's just say we had a good night, and terrible morning.

But ... those 124 pints will cost 20% or less than what a bar charges.

You can always fill up what you don't finish into growlers and save them for about a month.

I think someone was pulling your leg on the 2 day limit on returning a Keg or maybe it was a store policy. I just called up the local store (Manchester NH) and asked if I could return it in a few weeks and they said no problem.

Also the $80 for deposit is $30 for the Keg and $50 for the Tap
Since I own a tap (free pile at garage sale ) that lowers the cost.

Good call on the growlers. I'm going to be attending a Keg party soon and they just went on my packing list

Kegerator

I like the way you think, brian. I have also contemplated one. And, you'll save a whole hell of a lot more than 20% of a bar price. I save more than that by just filling growlers at the LBS.

I'm just tired of standing in front of the return machines spilling beer on myself plus buying ice for the cooler etc, I am looking at the Danby and the Nostalgia (yes I have read the reviews) and am looking for some input before I purchase

If you just go with the keg in a old fridge. Cut a hole in the door for fancy tap, or just open door each time with a small tap. You could also get the CO2 tank setup. Or just a pump type keg tap. You can find a used tap on e-bay. A used fridge on craigslist. Then you could be in business! Just find a space for the fridge in the garage or mancave. If the old fridge has a freezer, you could fill it with SuperPretsel, Hot Pockets, poppers, and mozz sticks. PARTY! The next investment will be the neon signs. A padlock may be a good idea if teenagers are home alone.

Going along the home fridge idea. A old neighbor of mine did one with that could hold two ΒΌ kegs (or 1/6 kegs) with two taps so he could have two different beers in there (also his wife liked the lighter variety).

So when do you want us there to ummm... test the system?

Personally I like variety (Magic Hat Samplers, Long Trail Survival Packs, Saranac Trail Mix, etc) so I'm not keg-oriented, but I concur with Newman, Shenty et al re. the old fridge routine.

Wait a minute...if I get four refrigerators off Craigslist....

Fighting over Yuengling? Doh.

Now if it had been Jersey downstream from the chemical plant swamp water, like phony Rolling Rock, justifiable homicide.

I disconnected the freezer tray and wrapped it around the keg : ) The beer never froze because there were so many holes in the fridge because I did it myself in college, lol. Every once in a while had to go in there and pick out the ice.

well I think his friend was doing the righteous thing, eschewing the light beer.

as for the perpetrator, wow. what has the youth of America come to if they actually prefer light beer?

I used to like Rolling Rock in the summer when it was "...from the glass lined tanks of Old Latrobe..." But now it's just Budweiser in a green bottle brewed in Newark, NJ.

Agreed, somehow it was the perfect antidote for summer heat & humidity.

those glass-lined tanks imparted just a slight touch of skunkiness, maybe that was the secret.

That's just way too classy of an ad for that beer. Sure, my dad enjoyed his on a dock, but he never was in the water and he got his own beverages from the back yard fridge. However, the glass is true to form.
