Close to the end of 86, get off on the other side of Chautauqua Lake and take a drive up 394 to Chautauqua Institution-- founded in 1874 as a summer training center for Methodist ministers. It's now a center for culture, arts and music. There's a gate fee in the summer though Sunday's are free. The architecture is beautiful and the lake is great from the shores. Best to walk around rather than drive as cars are limited.

Chautauqua Institution

While we're stopping for the night in this area on our way out we probably won't be doing any sightseeing unfortunately. (So many great ideas here.)

Any suggestions on where to stay or have a meal? (I'm going to edit the OP to reflect this query.)

Second the Bar Bill in East Aurora--

If you're in for the wine tour, Route 20 north from the PA border to Eden Angola is full of wineries-- some good, some bad but always interesting.

Bar Bill sounds real good but its a bit out of the way for this trip - but there's always next year - I'll have to keep it in mind!

If you like ski towns try Ellicottville. It's on Route 219 about 20 minutes north of I-86. You would be 3.5 hours from Cleveland. The Wingate hotel is in the village so you could walk to shops and dinner. Retail shops all close at 5:00PM.

Hey Abubob, maybe you can solve this mystery for us. Not the Valbella ski area, which is adequately documented here, but the south facing slopes on the other side of the valley. They look for all the world like ski slopes, not logging roads or gas drilling. It's just 3 miles off the highway at Alleghany. I suppose you can't solve the mystery just by looking at the slopes, you'd have to find somebody to ask.

NY Lost Wing Hollow is nearby.

That's not far from our route. I'll try to have a look and ask around. There looks to be some residences in the immediate area.

What do you suppose those trenches are the top of the slope?

Don't miss Brooks Barbecue in Oneonta NY (off of I88 ) for lunch or dinner. Extremely reasonable price, and the best BBQ chicken I have ever had. This is always a stop for me on the way home from a ski trip to the Catskills.

Well, they're not aligned to defend the area against attacks from below.

They forgot the other two sides if it's for a foundation.

Paintball perhaps? Each side gets a trench and they try to replicate the battle of Verdun?

It seems nobody knows what these trails are for. When I look at the Google images, they make it look so much like a ski area design. You gotta wonder about that pond at the base.

A word to the wise for all. A friend of mine lives near Danbury Ct. His adult son and girlfriend live with him. She works in Brewster, N.Y. about 15- 20 minutes away.
He told me she got a speeding ticket, in N.Y., on the way home this winter (didn't say how fast). She paid the fine a hundred or so. A month later she got a letter from New York State advising her she still owed the surcharge. $300.
Advise using cruise at no more than 5 over.

I've heard about this surcharge. I think it's New York's way of taking the surcharge to your insurance. Basically they say we won't tell your insurance company if you pay us $300. At least that how it was explained to me.

Trip Report: Our trip though NY via the Southern Tier Highway was a success. There were so many things that caught our eye for places to stop and investigate that we've already discussed the possibility of taking extra days just for the trip across. We stopped at the Pine Hill Resort on Chautauqua Lake so briefly - arriving well after dark and leaving early in the morning - that we didn't even get to meet our hosts or enjoy any time on the lake.

On our return trip through I got a chance to stop in Olean to investigate the mysterious satellite image discussed earlier in this thread. Here's the story: It was a planned 4 season resort with tennis courts and golf course. The developer and owner Mathias Hefti (pronounced "hufty" ) died unfortunately in 2003 before he could finish developing the area. He and his wife, Nancy, skied all over the northeast including Stratton and Magic Mountains in VT. They settled in Olean sometime in the 1960's while he taught at Holiday Valley and (I think she said) Butterfly Ridge (?) on the other side of the valley. The two lines at the top of the slope is what's left of the foundation of a house Mathias had started. I had a brief but friendly interview with Nancy on the back porch of the apartment building that she owns that you see in front of the snowmaking pond.

Perhaps Rocket would want to add New York to the cancelled ski areas and list this. But that would mean changing the name to Northeast Cancelled Ski Areas instead of New England Cancelled Ski Areas and that would just confuse everyone. Not to mention there's probably nearly as many cancelled areas in New York alone as in all New England.
