How Many New Areas Did You Ski This Past Season?

Posted: May 14, 2012 - 2:23 AM GMT I don't think we did this one yet this year..... How many new ski areas did you ski or ride this year? Looking at my ski log list, even in this poor snow year I was suprise that I skied 5 new areas. 1. Dynamite Hill. Definetely a dymanite local rope tow hill. Bring some leather gloves if you go. 2. Gore. One of those places that could use a good James Neihues map. The current map doesn't do it justice. 3. Whiteface. Wasn't the best day. 2" of fresh snow but on a very hard surface underneath. Would love to do the Wilmington Trail that bousquet19 and I slid down the bottom half of on a better day. 4. Solitude, UT. Very nice area. But I think I'll check out some of the other UT areas before I go back. 5. Powder Mountain, UT. Loved it! Spring conditions and the Paradise Lift/Area wasn't open the day I was there but every other lift was and everything was groomed to perfection. Can't wait to go back. Where did you ski for the first time this past season? |

Posted: May 14, 2012 - 12:34 PM GMT Six first timers this winter (and one near-first timer): Red River, NM, Steamboat and Beaver Creek, CO, Saddleback, Sunday River and Mt Abram, ME. Of those the best skiing was two days in early March with lots of new snow at Saddleback. Met an online acquaintance who showed my son and I around all of Saddleback's glades, then on second day we enjoyed a very low crowd Monday with 5" of fresh overnight snow and bright sun. Thought Muleskinner was one of the coolest trails, narrow and challenging with fantastic views.  I did two great days at Taos, NM after the day at Red River. I had skied Taos one day about 20 years ago when I was altitude sick and didn't really get to enjoy it. So those two days at Taos in Jan '12 were almost like my first time. Taos now ranks in my top five favorite places ever. Real throwback kind of place with beautiful, challenging terrain. |

Posted: May 14, 2012 - 1:02 PM GMT Butternut for me. I probably won't go back there for a solo day but it will be a good place to meet my daughter. I would have gotten to Windham if the season had lasted longer - since I noticed Costco offers a good discount. I'm still focused on shorter drives; never went to Vermont this past season. |

But then again, I think I have now skied every open public lift serviced area in New England, so in a lean snow year it is even harder to get on to the semi-private areas here in NE I haven't skied yet. Ski Big Bear at Masthope (Trackbiker introduced me to this quirky little place) 6. Black Mountain of Maine 7. Middlebury Snow Bowl 7 new areas (or 6) is the most I've added in a few years. So even though it was a sucky season, it holds many fine memories. |

Posted: May 15, 2012 - 11:46 AM GMT Finally got a chance to ski in NH-Loon and Cannon-not bad, but I'd like to try 'em with more snow (we were there in mid-Feb.) Second trip to Utah, although there will be many more as our Daughter and her family moved to SLC in January. Six days of skiing and three new areas: Alta (2 days) Snowbird and Solitude. Lots more to go out there! |

I used to teach there, parttime, in the 1960s. But it isn't a place where people usually drive for more than an hour to ski. Just curious. |

Would have like to pick up a small one like Tuxedo or Living Memorial Park, but it didn't work out. Anyway, managed 9 new, 1 short of my annual goal of 10. Panorama Fairmont Hot Springs Kimberley Whitewater Salmo Red Mountain Pass Powderkeg Fernie Castle Best day was Kimberely, fresh powder all day long. |
