Never been to the Glen, but have heard alot of stories around spectator and flagger campfires. The stories make Green Park at Sebring seem downright tame and wholesome.

Mark Donohue was always a legend to me. He died months after I was born...
He drove a car that would be unthinkable today...
917
Quote: Porsche, Penske, and Donohue quickly started the development of the 917-30, complete with a reworked aerodynamic "Paris" body and a 5.4-liter turbocharged Flat-12 engine whose output could be adjusted between approximately 1100 and 1500 bhp by turning a boost knob located in the cockpit. During the development of this motor, the German Porsche engineers often asked Donohue if the motor finally had enough power. His tongue-in-cheek answer was "it will never have enough power until I can spin the wheels at the end of the straightaway in high gear.
1100 horsepower in a car that turns!!! A car that also turns in both directions!!!! And deals with elevation changes!!!! Plus it can be dialed up to 1500hp if needed!!!

overintoxicated fan base?
No stories from the bog, but I have witnessed and occasionally participated in traditions that have been handed down from the fans in the boot.
If Skiing and Road Racing has a similar demographic, I wonder if ciscokid has ever crossed paths with Brian Redman's Cat.

The cat does tend to come out of the shadows after a few rounds of drinks have been downed.
Although I don't know if Brian Redman's Cat has been spotted at any Après-ski hangouts. Well maybe around a bonfire at a small surface lift area... That seems to be the cat's style.

Many of the fans in The Boot were, The Bog People earlier. They just got shuffled away to The Boot. I once shared brews at Mosport in the mid 90's with a bunch of old guys who claimed to be from the Brotherhood of Wood. They told a pretty convincing story. One of them owned, an estate auction company. Anyway during an estate auction a grand piano didn't sell (no reserve) not even one cent bid on it. He said the cost to remove it was more than it was worth. After the auction. He was responsible for removing the contents of the house which were not bid upon.
The Piano found it self at The Boot.......... Where it was on the Saturday night.... Summarily burned at the stake.

Sorry didn't mean to accuse you of driving a Lemons
(link provided for those who have no idea what we are talking about.) Although I have to say 24 hours of Lemons is a lot of fun! We found an old beater roundy round car for almost scrap value and had a great time.
Also your ride is sweet!

Thanks. Very happy with that car and hoping to keep its speed and appearance matching.
my previous race car, an old Spec RX7, was definately Lemons worthy.
It now spends it's days being passed around as a cheap Drivers School car.

The Bog People
Well, I never considered myself an old-timer but I guess I will qualify soon. For my 16th birthday my older brother and older sister took me to the 1976 USGP. The bog was still in existence and I walked around wide-eyed as a wet-behind-the-ears kid of 16. It was a rainy weekend (kinda normal for The Glen) so the Bog was in full force. It was a pretty wild scene. I still have a flourescent orange bumper sticker depicting a flaming bus going into the Bog with a giant hand coming out of the mud grasping for it. It says "Ive been to The Bog - Watkins Glen". My brother told me a few stories about the different items stolen, driven into the bog and burned. I remeber one of those towable, illuminated roadside signs with "Show Us Your ****" as you drove into the parking lot. I saw a car that people had completely covered in the same bumper sticker, the glass, lights, everything. I have also heard and chanted my share of "the other side sucks". James Hunt won in a McClaren. In later years Kodak had an interest in the track. I remember also seeing some gents at one end of the crossover bridge before the start/finish line with a card table and a particular bull's appendage and a little folding paper sign in front of it that said "Kodak photo op". Intersting place to go but waaaay tamer than it used to be.

I remember those bumper stickers. My first time at the glen was in the 80's.... You could still buy them!
Also here is an article from 1976. The Milwaukee Journal I just found.
