Quote: I stopped by Ascutney yesterday. Employees from Sky Trac and Crotched Mt had spooled up the haul rope and were working in the rain, spooling up the sand line. The chairs were parked on a side rail at the bottom terminal and the assemblies from tower one had been removed.
Thanks for the update. What is a "sand line"?

Its a wire rope, smaller & lighter than the haul rope. When putting up a haul rope its used to pull the larger rope into place. I've never seen the process in reverse so I'm not certain why its used.
I've tried to attach some pictures but I'm locked out of my gallery.

The sand rope is used during the removal process to keep tension on the haul rope as it is removed. It's designed to keep the haul rope from drooping loosely, falling off the sheave rollers and dragging through the dirt.

Crotched has posted a number of pictures on their Facebook page you don't need to be a member to view them.

These are very nice photos. When cutting the haul rope, my guess is they avoid cutting at the splice and that the original splice may be inspected but is always good.

The FB pics today showed lowering many of the lift towers--nice views from the mountain too! They're doing a great job showing the progress of the transition.

The summit bullwheel is gone too.
Chris, is it you taking all these pictures and posting them?
Please thank whoever's doing it.

Great stuff! Anybody have an update on what's happening with the removal of the HSQ at Ascutney?

Crotched’s Clever Solution to Connect Virtual with Real World
By Gregg Blanchard
Have you every seen a ski resort photo on social media and wondered which part of the mountain holds such tasty looking turns? So have I. If I know the mountain well, I can usually make a decent guess as to where the photo was snapped, but not always. With many people following your resort’s seasonal story via social media, I thought what Crotched did was a clever solution to connect what I am seeing in a 640 pixel wide photo with where it stands on a 640 acre mountain.
Pretty clever, right? But clever in a way that makes me wonder why this is the first time I’ve seen it. Just a small trail map in bottom left hand corner with the area in the photo highlighted gives you a bearing on what you are looking at. Simple.
Winter Wonderland
It’s funny that this should pop up as summer starts, but I can see this being very useful and cool come wintertime. See some tasty corduroy without a soul around? A cliff band you’d like to huck your meat off of? A clean line through some glades? I think the simple act of knowing where they could find the things they are being taunted with from their cubicle might just increase your fans’ desire to visit.
It’s one thing to see a great line or scenic vista shared on Facebook, imagine having that experience yourself, and have no idea how to actually do so. It’s another to have a map that leads you to snow-buried treasure.
Great idea, Crotched. Well done.

Looks like the patrol shack and sled/sign hut made it to the summit in mostly one piece yesterday. (The porch is off.)
I hope they got some good pictures to put on the book of faces.

Will the new lift follow the same footprint as the old one to the summit?

It should be quite close to the old path.
At the botton, you've got the ATC on one side and a drainage system/creek/woods on the other side. So you're limited where you can put the bottom.
At the top you've got a small cut to the summit next to the patrol shack, so unless they're going cut something new, that will be the termination point. If anything the lift will be slightly closer to the trees at edge of Pluto's plunge.

Alpine Training Center (and maintenance offices). It's the building at the bottom of meteor to the skier's right of the lift with the big deck on the side.
It's also the building housing the base webcam.

I wonder if the old summit lift at Crotched will be reinstalled soon as the Summit Local from Mount Snow is still sitting in a field since it was removed in 2011! The Summit Local was going to be three different lifts at three Peak mountains!

Is all of the Summit Local still at the base, or just a fraction of it? It was my impression that although it was being split up into three lifts, some would still not be used as the lift was something like 7800 ft. But perhaps with the bad winter, Peaks put off some improvements for a year.
