Quote: Chairs are getting (re)galvanized.
Wow, fancy! Is it really necessary after only 13 or so seasons?
Quote: Apparently the rope position sensors need to be disconnected for the summer to avoid lightning damage. Since they were not, they will need to be replaced.
It was my impression as mentioned on this board numerous times that they were never installed in the first place. And if they have to be taken off for lightning, how can HSQ's reopen a half hour after a thunderstorm in the spring?

RPDs are usually only disconnected if the lift doesn't run during the summer. Other forms of lightning protection may be used too: grounding rods in the terminals that clamp to the haul rope, surge protectors in the comm line boots on the towers, transient protection on circuits in the control cabinets and comm lines that unplug at the control cabinet.

The GM of Peaks approved galvanizing after comparing one that they had done (which was on display in the lodge) against one in its current condition. The expense was minimal in the grand scheme of things. I think it will make a good impression.
The guys at Crotched are working with the former head lift guy from Ascutney and he said it was a common rumor those sensors we not installed.
Obviously you can't remove the sensors for a spring t-storm, but if they happen to get damaged the rope speed is limited to 600 FPM.

I found a photo that shows an RPD on the Ascutney Quad. Its below the haul rope between the 2nd and 3rd sheaves.

Latest CM update ... the crew from Sky Trac arrived on-site Friday afternoon ... Work is currently underway to remove the haul rope from the Riblet quad. Blasting and shaping of the summit terminal and unloading area have been ongoing for the past few weeks. Lots of activity around CM and things are definitely moving along! I'll try to post some pics soon.

Crotched's live base cam is currently showing the cable removal. I will be relocating the summit cam up above within 2-3 weeks.

From both a posting elsewhere and the base area webcam, it appears that the haul rope at CM was removed!

Thanks for the summit cam the last year. It makes me feel like I have visited the summit each day from work.

June 3, 2012 - Sunday
I went past CM this AM. Too wet from the weekend rains for me to climb, but here is what I saw in the base area.
There is a large number of double chairs on the ground near the West Double. Not sure what's going on there. There is a large number of triple chairs on the ground near the Zero-G Chair. Not sure what's going on there. [Unless tedede (in his earlier posting) meant that these chairs were being regalvanized. I assumed he was refering to the HSQ Chairs.]
I didn't see any of the chairs from the old fixed grip Summit Chair in the base area, although a large spool in the parking lot appeared to be the coiled up haul rope.
The towers all appeared to be still standing, although the sheave-trains have been removed. Still no sign of any parts of the HSQ on the hill.

I did mean the Ascutney chairs. I believe on the double/triple chairs they need to send 10-20% of the grips off each year for non-destructive testing.
Perhaps the old summit chairs were also sent for re-galvanizing too before they head south.

I stopped by Ascutney yesterday. Employees from Sky Trac and Crotched Mt had spooled up the haul rope and were working in the rain, spooling up the sand line. The chairs were parked on a side rail at the bottom terminal and the assemblies from tower one had been removed.
