Quote: The area at the new top of the HSQ (consistent with the Star Trek/Space theme, the HSQ will be called the Rocket) has a number of excavators working up there and drilling macines for placing the explosives.
Ha! The Crotch Rocket!

I hiked the mountain last weekend and went down the old Turbo trail. It's going to be a steep one and should be a lot of fun to ski. I figured we could talk a poll of for a new name. Putting on my Spock ears, Upper NCC-1701 would probably be the most logical. But I think "Warp 9" would be a good name.
Keep in mind that I'm asking this question not as a representative of crotched mountain, only as a semi-avid contributor to SnowJournal and that by volunteering a name, should it be used, you are entitled to no special rights, privileges, courtesies, amenities, revenue, kickbacks, free beers, or any form of compensation

Has this been hit-on...
Crotched.com has rendered the detach into Google Earth:
3-D "Rocket"
For the social media crowd CM has some de-construction photos on Facebook:
Out with the older
Hopefully "in with the old" will be coming soon.

Sorry if I'm late to the party but it's been a while since I've checked in on the forum. I was happy to hear that Crotched was replacing/extending the summit lift. Are there plans of upgrading the speed of the lift above what it ran when installed at Ascutney? When I rode that lift several years ago it struck me as the slowest detachable lift I had ever been on. It didn't seem faster than a fixed grip. I expect it had to do with the size of the drive system but I don't know for sure. Forgive me if this has been discussed elsewhere.

Ascutney was out of money when they installed it so some sort of rope alignment sensors were never installed on the towers. This is required to operate a lift faster than 600 ft/min. The standard operating speeds of fixed grip lifts is around 450 to 500 ft/min. I imagine that Peaks would install the sensors on the new HSQ at Crotched.

I should've realized when I saw the new bearings.

Do you know if it was operated at 600 FPM when it was running at Ascutney? It was painfully slow. The fixed grip it is replacing at Crotched "felt" faster.

Your "out with the old" photo is the replacement of the summit bull-wheel bearing last summer and IS NOT the removal of the summit chair which has not yet begun.

I like to believe that Peak Resorts management is NOT stupid enough to buy a used HSQ to operate as a fixed grip chair (that they could have purchased new for less.)

When I asked an operations guy he said it would run at 1000 fpm. You can't get to the summit in under 4 minutes at 600 fpm.

You are correct although telling what they were actually doing was a new piece of information! I only knew because I happened to be there that day! Very interesting to watch the process of changing that bearing. There are a lot of behind the scene things that go on at ski areas that even experienced skiers are unaware of!

Cool. I was pretty sure Crotched wouldn't run it as slow as it ran at Ascutney. Crotched runs a good operation from everything I've seen so far. It's our "go to" mountain in southern NH. The ticket price is fair and the slope maintenance is very good.

Only one small island of snow remains.
There is an excavator working at the new summit and a much bigger drilling machine for placing the explosives. The resculpting of the area at the summit continues.
Still no sign of any parts of the HSQ on the hill, and while all the chairs are removed from the current summit quad, the haul rope is still up.
It appears that some major maintenance has been done on the West Double.

How long is the chair they are removing? Any idea regarding plans for it?

It's going to Hidden Valley, MO, according to an earlier thread.
Not sure about the length though.

The ropes on both chairs should be coming down this week.
Chairs are getting (re)galvanized.
Apparently the rope position sensors need to be disconnected for the summer to avoid lightning damage. Since they were not, they will need to be replaced.
