Website says they are closed for the season...shame since there was decent to good coverage on the east side trails and the blacks. Maybe they will reconsider if it cools down by the end of the week.

The GM called it this AM. Not because we couldn't make it through this week's hot spell (the forecast is for 80 on Thursday), but because the weekend forecast is for rain.

Mar. 22, 2012 - Thurs.
I have been away from the mountain since Sunday. When I left on Sunday, the mountain was 90% open. The quantity of snow that has disappeared in the last 4-days is shocking. For those who remember "end of the season" in ASC and before at Killington, the skiing was like that: there was a good deal of walking between patches of snow.
The truth is, that there are still places on "The Park (the Valley Chair Lift Line)" that could be plowed out for a t2b run, but there is no fiscally sound reason that CM's management might want to. I would say there was more skiable snow on May 1, 2011 than on Mar. 22, 2012.
And with today's forecast to be in the 80's, this might even have been the last "earn-your-turns" day at CM for me this season. ;-(

Mar. 29, 2012 - Thurs.
No longer is there enough to plow into a conntinuous t2b run.
I found a few patches, perhaps with a couple hundred vertical on which to make some turns. There was far more snow on the hill in early May in 2011.
At 96 days; 89 lift, 7 hike up: it doesn't look like I'll make it to 100 days this year.

There's always Wildcat that should accept Crotched employee passes. Try the Spruce Moose in N. Conway if you're looking for a nice B&B.

I'm not real worried about the economics. It's more the quality of the skiing (see my Killington report of last week) and my ability to find someone to accompany me on the drive!

I think you deserve a trip out west. If ever there was a year...

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I hate travel in general and airports in particular! I tend to stay in the northeast!

I climbed CM today, without skis. Hard to believe that a year ago CM was t2b and today all that remained were a few scattered patches of snow.
What is encouraging is the magnitude of work going on including clearing the summit trails and removing the old snowmaking pipes that remained on the summit from the previous life (pre-2002 CM).
No signs yet of parts and pieces of the HSQ; or the removal of the summit quad.

Have they cleared enough to get a view to the south? Back in the day you could see Boston on a clear day.

I only climbed to the Ski Patrol hut, so I don't know about the back of the mountain. The snowmaking pipes taken off the top are lying on Galaxy. I asssume they will be recycled.
There is a large digging machine on the upper extension of Satellite Summit - I assume doing some clearing.

Does only Climbing to the ski patrol hut count as Climbing Crotched Mountain? Sorry Josh but I think you have to summit for it to count in mountain climbing. Check with Bill N. on that. Thanks for all the posts this year and looking forward to news from the mountain this summer.

Please clarify: At Ascutney or at CM?

Chairs at CM are off today ... I'm told that the chairs will be coming off the Ascutney quad next week. Ropes will be down on both lifts soon after.

I was at Crotched Mountain today and in light of JR's comment, I went to the top - not just to the ski patrol hut
There is almost no snow left. The biggest of the remaining whales on the Big Park could have supported 3 or 4 turns.
The level of activity for the off season is amazing. Since my last report:
- Chairs are off the haul rope
- Trail clearing at the summit continues
- A blasting crew is working at the summit
For those of you who have climbed to the top over the last decade, the unsightly rusted remnants of the pre-1990 CM snowmaking pipes are gone.
I am told that the removal of the summit lift will begin within the next two weeks. No sign yet of parts of the new lift arriving at CM.
By the way: the remnants of the yesterday's PA storm blew by and there was a brief snow squall at the summit today, although not enough to cover the ground!

Much activity continues on the mountain. This time, we hiked Super Nova to Milky Way to Moonwalk, then up the upper extension of Satellite Summit. From there we continued past the several antenna complexes on Old Crotched and then back down via the old crossover trail coming back in at the Maintenance buildings.
There are still a half dozen small islands of snow on the Big Park (formerly known as Magnitude).
Apparently, the cheapest and most efficient way to get the cleared wood off the trails is by burning and the wet weather of the week allowed number of the wood piles to be burned.
The area at the new top of the HSQ (consistent with the Star Trek/Space theme, the HSQ will be called the Rocket) has a number of excavators working up there and drilling machines for placing the explosives. A significant resculpting of the area at the summit has already occurred.
Still no sign of any parts of the HSQ on the hill, and while all the chairs are removed from the current summit quad, the haul rope is still up.
