BTW: Babson College Brown University, St. Anselms, Boston College are among the college teams who train at CM.
Harvard also, but they are not in this division. I suspect a few other colleges train at CM also. I am a skier - not a watcher, but while going up the chairlift, I noticed there were some very talented skiers there.
I thought Harvard trained on Smith Walton at Wachusett? Certainly much closer.
Perhaps in previous years. I've seen Harvard practicing here this year. I was surprised that Brown schlepped all the way up here from RI. It seems like a long drive for the 2 hours they are actually on the hill.

Feb. 5 Sun. thru Feb. 11 Sat.
Small variations in wx; Each day is pretty close to the same: a little fresh machine-made snow and corduroy. Bumps are hard with fast patches in the troughs. No snow in the woods.
Feb. 12 Sun.
Probably coldest windchills of the season. The place was empty. Snow was CM signature PP and corduroy, with windblown hardpacked in places by late PM. It has been reported that snowmaking is done for this season.
Feb. 13-17 Mon.-Fri.
Hoses and cables being removed from Polecats; Wheel mounted guns parked off the hill.
Kind of like the movie, "Ground Hog Day": Slight variations in wx, but essentially CM signature PP and corduroy remains the skiing condx day after day.

Feb. 18-22 Sat.-Wed.
Crowds not too big. No real liftlines. Beautiful weather. Perfect corduroy every AM.
1/2" was our AM of the 22nd blockbuster storm of the month. It was no powder day, but mixed with the grooming it was a perfect surface for most of the day.
I thought Sunday was a pretty busy day. The cafe was packed at noon, and the 2:30 special had four lines of people half-way across the lobby waiting to buy tickets. It wasn't the one of the banner days we've seen in the past, but it was busier than your average weekend day.

Feb. 23 - Thurs.
Standard CM Perfect corduroy
Feb. 24 - Fri.
Standard CM Perfect corduroy AM; Heavy PM; Pouring rain evening; changeover to snow around 9PM. First power outage around 10PM for only 5 min. Second power outage at 2AM. Lifts emptied with auxiliary power. Given the wx, not many people
Feb. 25 - Sat.
Only 2 inches of snow. Crowds bypassed us for areas advertising bigger snow amounts. Masters Race kept us from being a ghost town. No liftlines. Wind wasn't as bad as predicted. (Last midnight Madness of the season)
Feb. 26 to 29 - Sun. thru Weds.
Like Saturday, crowds bypassed us for areas advertising bigger snow amounts. Back to standard CM Perfect corduroy; No liftlines. Beautiful weather. Wind wasn't as bad as predicted.
Crotched Mtn - Feb 22nd
I added some more pics of my trip to Crotched Mtn last week.
PS: I am not affiliated with any ski area. So there was no photoshopping.
JS, is the new chair going right in place of the existing one or to the west a little?

JS, is the new chair going right in place of the existing one or to the west a little?
As far as I know, the current summit chair will begin disassembly sometime in April and will be shipped to Hidden Valley, MO (another Peak Resorts property).
The new lift, again - as far as I know - will follow the same line as the current lift. No one has expressed how the base loading area will be placed because it is quite large (length-wise). Some suggest that there will be some relocation of the parking lot to accommodate it, but that is a guess.
Interesting that if they did that, it would add 5 to 10 feet of vertical thereby getting it closer to the 1000' vertical "magic number".
Any guesses if it will extend to the actual summit? I assume a previous chair once went up there?
If you really mean the actual summit, that would require that the lift take a left turn. (I think mapnut provided details of this in a previous thread some time ago.) There is a cleared area to a flat section just to the east (left) of where the 1980's quad landing ramp was located. The new lift will take a straight shot path up from the landing ramp from the current summit chair.
Part of the infrastructure modifications include some trail widening to provide a green circle off the top and to move some dirt around to provide a bigger landing area. I am told also, that the current Ski Patrol hut will be put on skids and dragged to the top. I am further told that a pool is being started by Ski Patrollers to see how far they actually move it before it disintegrates

I've been under it for the past two weekends pulling out nails

March 2, Friday
Solstice was lovely. The ice bumps on UFO/Equinox grew to powder bumps. I tried Turbo but there was a lot of brush that we had not cleaned up in the fall.
Serious glades: not yet: all the chutes off Super Nova were in great shape; I tried 4 other glades including Kuyper Belt, Uranus, Fortress and one that I don't know the name of. All allowed a few good turns. Unfortunately, the summer crews didn't do well and I hooked tips more than once under limbs that had been left in unfortunate places. Aside to remski: we'll have to do better next year.
March 3, Sat.
About 3" of heavy snow came down before turning to freezing rain which crusted things over followed by heavy rain. No damage to the base, but the powder will be back to machine groomed corduroy and loose granular. I suspect that in the grand scheme of things, if this settles in the woods and we get another shot of snow, the glades may actually become quite skiable.
March 4-10
Nothing new to report! Still great cover and wonderful skiing. Spectacular sunsets at the top of the West Double at about 6PM (7PM with DST)

During a discussion at Ragged yesterday Crotched came up as an area that may have received the most benefit from this last snow. I suspect, though, that the few limbs you hit would have been long buried in a "normal" snow year.
Buried, exactly. 13.5 " certainly not enough for tree or glade skiing when their isn't any base snow but if we can keep this base and get 6" or more we will be in descent shape in the glades at Crotched.

March 15-18, 2012 -Thursday to Sunday
After 4-great days at Sugarbush, the nicest thing about being at home is Crotched Mountain's fabulous grooming. We still got bumps and 90+% open. Weather being what it is, management is opting not to open on Friday, the 16th; reopening for the 17th and 18th. Very spring snow. Still over 90% open. Good coverage.
I'd bet against their reopening for the 24th-25th, because they could if they wanted to. It may be a last minute decision dependant on the weather forecast.
I was there on the afternoon of 3/17...slush was heavy but coverage was pretty good. The warm weather this week will make it go quickly though.
Like the bump setup on UFO and Equinox (even though I couldn't ski them...yet).
Good way to end my 2011-2012 season.
Welcome to CM!
It hasn't been formally announced that tomorrow (Mar. 1 will be the last day of this season. My guess is that if the forecasted weather by Thursday the 22nd for next weekend (24-25) is good - and if Pat's and/or Gunstock is open, CM will be too. There is much more snow on this mountain than you think!

Thanks for the welcome back, only time I made it over to CM...and I'd agree that there is a good amount of white stuff (hard to call it snow anymore). I was actually surprised at how much was left, they must have made a tremendous amount during the season. Just wonder how much will be left after several 60 to 70 degree days or even if they would get enough people.
