Mario Scheiber returns home before Speed Opening

Thursday 24 November 2011

Austrian racer Mario Scheiber injured his back in downhill training in Vail (USA) last week. Despite intensive treatment he will not be able to race the Speed Opening in Lake Louise or participate in the Beaver Creek Birds of Prey downhill and super-G races next week. A full diagnosis will only be available after further examination. Scheiber travelled back to Austria from Lake Louise on Wednesday.

"I have major back pain. Exactly there where I already have a disc hernia. Luckily it is not extending further. But I cannot even think of tucking," said Scheiber.

"It is obviously a real shame. Last season I already missed most of the races and now the season begins this way. I have experienced this often enough. I have to now concentrate on getting fit and give my body some time to recover, before preparing for Gröden. That is my next goal," commented Scheiber further.

After consultation with team doctor Helmuth Eggl and the men's head coach Mathias Berthold it was decided that Scheiber returns home immediately:"Unfortunately Mario's situation did not improve and he is flying back today Wednesday. Following further exampinaion there we can define a plan for Gröden,“ said Berthold.

A start in Beaver Creek was out of question according to Berthold: "Unfortunately the injury is too severe to even try to start in Beaver Creek. Mario is not expecting just to be at the start. When he is racing he wants to compete for victory and that is currently not possible.“

Didier Cuche with passion - Didier Défago speed before comeback

Valentin Oetterli

(Si) on Saturday evening (starting 19.30 CET clock) is done with the downhill in Lake Louise of the season opener in the speed range of the men. The Swiss team reigns after almost smooth preparation stray much confidence. (pictured Didier Cuche)

As is usual in the last decade, the World Cup speed disciplines in the winter in the ski resort in the Canadian Rockies launched. Performed 24 hours after the downhill in Lake Louise on Sunday in Super-G, the initial assessment. The comparison with the Speed-start of the season fell last - in contrast to the years 2000 to 2007, when it 14 races in just three podium finishes were - for the Swiss rider often very positive.

A year ago, provided Tobias Green Fields (with his first World Cup victory) and Carlo Janka in the super-G is a Swiss-Ski-double success. In Downhill binned, led by Silvan Zurbriggen (4th place), four Swiss in the top ten. 2009 convinced the downhill winner Didier Cuche and Carlo Janka as a third. In 2008 there were by Janka (downhill second) and Cuche (super-G-third) each recorded a podium finish.

"We have in the summer and autumn can often train with the best conditions. Also recently in Nakiska, we had luck with the weather," said Osi Inglin. The 43-year-old Schwyzer, who in the spring, Martin Rufener replaced as head coach, hopes for a similar good start in the last few winters. He speaks of a "compact and strong" team, which he had available. "The internal competition is great and beneficial for the performance of individuals . The drivers are ready to burn them at first use. We can see in front of Lake Louise . get involved if the competition is not a quantum leap succeeded, I am convinced of a strong showing, "said Inglin.

Cuche heart with blood
Inglin has with Didier Cuche and Carlo Janka two cracks, which belong to all the slopes and in all conditions of the favorites. The 37-year-old New Burger has been able to prepare for the summer and fall as desired and injury-free for the season. "Didier, the last two or three days in Nakiska yet bought a jagged and show the other drivers, who's the boss. He is also in the training with heart and soul into it an awful lot, almost like a 20-year-old. Didier is simply a class, "says the veteran Inglin.

"Clearly there were some days when I had not the stamina training so fun. But then came the best part of the season," said Cuche. "If it's just the fun of skiing were possible, I would drive until I'm 60 years old. But it's not just about fun in skiing, but also at risk. At the moment, does everything for me." This winter without major title fights, the Romand primarily the small crystal globes in downhill and Super-G in the eye, he could already save last season.

Janka's aching backs
Though he has conquered his heart rhythm disturbances due to the surgery in late February, is not free from Carlo Janka (injury) concerns. The 25-year-old Grisons is hampered by severe back pain since September. "Carlo has since been completed no more painless snow training. He has missed many days of training" , Janka's group coach Sepp Brunner regrets the lack of hours on the ski. Rather, the overall World Cup winners are announced in 2010 have long sessions with physiotherapists and osteopaths.

Departure comeback Défago
As long as no other driver says Didier Défago (34) on the departure of the day after. The Vancouver Olympic downhill gold medalist will compete in his first Lake Louise downhill for more than fifteen years. Défago are in advance of his (speed) comeback not too result-oriented. "This launch in the downhill is the last step on my way back. The result is only secondary," says Défago.

The Swiss team in Canada has more than ten grid positions in the downhill. Besides Cuche, Janka and Défago, and the other group-1 drivers Zurbriggen, Beat Feuz - both last year's downhill champion - and Patrick Kung are the top 30 drivers Marc Gisin and Ambrosi Hoffmann and additionally Vitus Lüönd (fixed launch site on European Cup) is set . To have the last ticket to a playoff in training between Green Fields and Daniel Albrecht. "I told the coaches that I feel ready , "says Wallis. For Albert, it would be the first start in the World Cup downhill since his horrific crash in January 2009 in Kitzbuehel, apart from the start in the combined downhill in Wengen last January. This trip was Albert nor aborted before the finish.

The World Cup program this week

in Lake Louise men (Ka). Thursday, 24 November: downhill training. - Friday, 25 November: final training session. - Saturday, 26 November: Departure (start clock 19.30 CET). - Sunday, 27 November: Super-G (19.00 clock).

Klaus Kroell's new leader role "relatively unimportant"

APA. With only two downhill victories on his reference list Krölll Klaus is the resignation of Michael Walchhofer the new number one team in the ÖSV departure become. But the 31-year-old Styrian few days before going to the Speed-opener at Lake Louise left to deal with the issue. "I is relatively unimportant. I do not think much on that, but look like me to bring my performance," said Kroll.

Although he himself was actually on the success of her "better" team in their own departure. "But the Walchi was the absolute number one," Kroell tried rectifying the relations. Walchhofer celebrated 19 World Cup victories, Kroll has been just three. Two of them in the downhill.

That he is the man with the biggest ÖSV views of the reconquest of the ball downhill, the 1.86 m wide and 95-pound powerhouse from Öblarn course, nobody needs to explain. Walchofer had last year led to the last race, but then have to make crystal short of the Swiss Didier Cuche. "We will all fight for it. Also, my big goal is a sphere. For this I will do my best," promised Kroll.

There were, however, not only the nearly 40-year-old Cuche as opponents. "Some strong riders are back at the beginning and you will have ten candidates to win. Only later will we know more," said Kroll. "I can only hope that we lay down the same as last year a good start and the end to get the ball back."

The internal comparisons and training times in the summer and autumn, declined to comment Kroell, dear, he held firmly diplomatically, "that we have alternated regularly." The summer training is to interpret such a thing anyway. "There is still no world champions. But I know what to do and review something rather not so. For if it then goes to the point, anyway everything looks quite different again."

The mood in the downhill team is certainly good, assured Kroll, the Styrian as the upcoming World Cup 2013 in Schladming-piste course knows well. "I'm here in the state team championships Styrian down, so come back often for skiing. But the track has and will change even more," says Kroll nearly one and a half years before its home World Cup.

But more important is the present and the latest start on Saturday with the downhill in Lake Louise. "I hope we whistle again," Kroell playing, laughing at the apparent speed of the Austrian secret racing suits from the previous year. To admit it: "We do not even know why they whistle We are not at the edge of the slope and listen to ourselves.."

EURO SNOW PROBLEMS:Signs of renewed North-Alpine tours

APA. The signs that the current North American Skitournee is more compact than planned, of course. In Val d'Isere, it looks for lack of snow for four at 10-11. December scheduled men's and women's races from bad, they could instead have from 6 December will be held in the United States. The decision will be or even must obviously fall much faster than previously announced.

For next Monday or Wednesday in France scheduled snow controls, as early as Monday but many runners would be after the races in Aspen and Lake Louise jetting back to Europe. It was expected therefore, often with a decision yet on this weekend.

If the race can not actually take place in Europe, would have "favorite" Beaver Creek and Aspen in principle ready to step in despite great logistical challenges. If the way to track personnel, some 500 volunteers and enough room to be organized relatively quickly for super-G and super combined and the women's giant slalom and men's slalom. That seems doable, the only truly relevant question was at the end but for the money.

"From the slopes ago we would have been able to go last week. We want to help, the FIS has always helped. But we can affect the financial burden does not carry its own," made it clear to John Dakin, chief press officer in Beaver Creek, which is "substantial" means needs. The American Association of priority and so the new U.S. Alpine director, the Austrian Patrick Riml worked so hard on this situation.

According to Dakin, there are approximately $ 1.5 million additional costs that must be met if the races in Beaver Creek will be held. "Alone our regular race next week at the Birds of Prey cost nearly $ 2.7 million. This is an absolute priority," Dakin was hoping to lace the FIS, the rights holder Infront and Vail Resorts would be a matching set.

The situation recalls in 2006. Then, too, should carry the Beaver Creek canceled in Val d'Isere and St Moritz European race of a substitute, but it ultimately failed was on the money. "It was money and politics," recalled Dakin. "Some insisted that the race does not take place in the U.S. but in Europe." The present in person ÖSV President Peter Schröcksnadel had then called the "crazy idea" to stage more races in Beaver Creek.

This time, the signs seem to be somewhat different. Was that the U.S. federation to other races of interest, was on hand. "The more opportunity the U.S. team just three and a half years before the World Championships to present themselves on home snow, the better," said Dakin.

Referred to in Aspen on Friday that nothing had been officially. Supposedly there would be absolutely a master race, but this would be impossible for TV transmission for technical reasons. Deadline for the organizers was there Saturday morning local time. "Only once we know whether we should organize racing and if so how many will we deal extensively with it," said press officer Jeff Hanle. "But of course we are ready to stage another World Cup race."

The new up & comer for the US Ski Team (finished 8th in the Aspen WC SL)...

Mikaela Shiffrin’s top-10 Aspen moment

Mikaela raced out of Ford Sayre when she a J-5/J-4 then went to Burke. My daughter used to race against her all the time as they were in the same region, of course my daughter would come in 12th, Mikaela 1st, with 6 second time difference (also she would beat the 2nd place finisher by 2 - 3 seconds). Even as a J-5/J-4 she had the form and speed to ski the gates like a pro.

DH FRIDAY LIVE USA FIS WC M

SWISS AND AUSTRIAN ON TOP, CAN THEY HOLD FOR RACE DAY?

LIVE W. DH 12:30

Quote:
The friendship between Lindsey Vonn and Maria Riesch Höfl- broke last winter. The eccentric American woman declined the invitation to Riesch wedding. Vonn is now before the divorce - and return to Maria. After the two end of last winter even went out of the way the eye contact, they join again in the arms. "Hopefully, we salute jointly by the podium in Lake Louise," Vonn wrote on Facebook. "I'm glad we were able to settle now but after a discussion of our dispute. It is all settled between us, and we are both looking forward to racing here," writes Riesch, also on Facebook.

FIS Hate eMaIL

Quote:
Translation: Excitement in Beaver Creek because of hate e-mail

APA. Strange events in Beaver Creek from. When the team captain's meeting FIS race director Guenter Hujara was distributed on Wednesday due to the successful relocation of the French race in the United States nor flowers, hugs and kisses. A day later there was a very different character. Hujara presented an e-mail in which the FIS was compared with the SS.

Cause of the non-anonymous message apparently is the discussion about the fact that the World Ski Federation (FIS) considerations hires, even for racers to sanction outside of the competition and especially in the new social networks expressed negative messages. Hujara expressed dismay of the electronic mail, in which the question was asked, since when Hitler and his SS henchmen would be resurrected and had taken the FIS.

The German said explicitly that he is not the news in connection with the last runner certainly bring even harsh criticism of the upcoming material reform. ". The testimony of the athletes are often factually is sad that a few idiots feel compelled from the outside to interfere," said Hujara and promised: "I love my job and I will make him keep it, how I do it."

It is noteworthy, however, that the FIS has not yet responded to runner-criticism, as expressed most recently Ted Ligety. The Americans had recently pulled hard in a blog on the FIS and the World Federation had among others as "incompetent" and his approach as "dictatorship" or "Tyrranei" means.

Even the threat of adversity Sweden Jon Olsson, even after he (annoying FIS) "FIS sucks" some time ago had stuck to his helmet. Sanctions threaten the free skiers, who wants to bet a 2014 qualify for the Olympics in Sochi, but curiously not because of the abuse, but because he has used this in conjunction with the FIS logo. This, it was Hujara, a trademark infringement. "There will probably be an action that may normally be let nobody liked."

Ligety, however, remains at first apparently unharmed and placed in Beaver Creek with his U.S. teammate Bode Miller after even a shovel. The jury must punish on the spot with up to 5,000 Swiss francs (4.077 euros), had not been called, said Hujara. The Appeal Committee may go up to 100,000 francs (81 539 €) and / or license revocation. "But this is then the responsibility of the board."

According Hujara is regulated in the ICR, as licensed racers have to behave. "Every athlete has signed, that he knows the competition rules. The Council also observed in the new media landscape, critical remarks and then evaluates them," said Hujara. Mortals must accept any conditions if he wanted to download something on the Internet. "With us, everybody thinks that he can use the system, but must accept any conditions."

He was therefore about the new athlete representative extremely happy, so Hujara. "So you can now regulate the right. Because if everyone does his own terms, can never work.
