Urs Lehmann, firefighter or arsonists?

Philip Bärtsch

(Si), Swiss Ski president Urs Lehmann is expressed in an interview to the departure of head coach Mauro Pini women and about any possible errors of the association's top.

Within four and a half weeks ago, the women's team with Stefan Abplanalp and Mauro Pini lost his two main trainers. What has made the association's top wrong?
"The two departures are of course very strongly linked. The first of Personnel was made clear by the second on the table. Because of the offenses committed by Stefan Abplanalp was the decision to separate himself from it, correct. With the resignation of Mauro Pini, we could expect is not. "

Have you tried to dissuade them from Pini's decision? Or are you a fresh start is due to the deadlock in the end even located?
"Contrary to his decision seems to me not at all. I can understand it from a human perspective. There is a lot happening in recent weeks, it has a lot of pressure on Pini built. As Swiss Ski president, I feel great regret and a certain disappointment. Finally, Pini had stipulated a minimum of three years, as we committed him in 2010. "

Stefan Abplanalp stayed yesterday for final negotiations in Norway. Did you weiterzubeschäftigen the idea of him that you are indeed in your extended circle of friends, but now?
"No. Abplanalp made exemption after his error by washing dirty laundry in public. At the moment the door for him."

The operational management with director Andreas Wenger and competitive sports chief Dierk Beisel is now worse than it did after the fall Abplanalp anyway. First, the decision for and against Pini Abplanalp -. And now takes his hat Pini
.. "It was clear that we had to choose one of two At that time we knew that Abplanalp is already His and our notice have even crossed. behind whom we had to ask ourselves, was so obvious. from the fact that Mauro would throw in the towel, then we could not go out really. the part of the Bureau, there are therefore neither Wenger nor Beisel to a reproach. "

They have been turbulent for the winter 2010/2011 with the cases Lara Gut and retained Martin Rufener conspicuously in the external representation. . However, you can not get away to play continuously the fireman
. "This is of course not at all in my mind I was looking for before the decision counterproductive Abplanalp personally talking with him, but unfortunately it was then after all, a next disciplinary offense -. of someone that I know about high not only as a man, but also as a ski instructor. I attestiere Abplanalp still great potential. "

What do you say to critics who see you as less of the firefighter as an arsonist?
"Let's get the most recent cases but once the series through. In the dispute between Pini and the Association of Good on the one hand, and Lara on the other hand, I placed myself behind . operational management to retirement of Martin Rufener, I must emphasize once more: he wanted to go We got to meet him as far as we could, he accepted our offer still is not That was not my idea Abplanalp and Pini But I do.... call for a certain discipline, leadership and clear lines. "

According to "look" you should have already made inquiries to the coordinates of Marius Arnesen. Do you have or anyone else in the organization of the Norwegians already contacted
. "The view I can not leave quite so, but I know Arnesen and consider him a very exciting coach personality just as much. We will endeavor to the best possible successor to Pini to find. "

When the wheel of time could turn back two years: Would you replace Hugues Ansermoz again by Mauro Pini
"We have discussed this very issue at the board meeting on Wednesday a long time and have concluded. We would opt again exactly the same. The technical concept, which referred us Pini, convinced us. "

Mauro Pini: The hope was high, the pile of rubble and

Mario Rall

One thing is clear: Mauro Pini has great qualities. The success he celebrated with the Spaniard Maria Rienda Contreras (six World Cup wins, eleven podium finishes), the meteoric rise of Lara Gut and the World Championship medals in 2009 (two silvers) speak for themselves.

And yet, Swiss Ski and Mauro Pini moved as anti-magnet. They approached to - and went back at a distance. When they wanted Pini 2005, this was not to be had. When he was after the separation from the team to have good, then broke it, no one wanted to integrate already-situated women engineers team. For this he was offered a job with the men, and created with Hans Flatscher, Roland Platzer, Sepp Brunner and then also Pini one knowhow excessive overkill. From stukturierter, far-sighted planning is no trace, for no sooner in office reined it Pini of the men the women, this time as chief.

That was the biggest mistake. A good mason chord is not necessarily a good builder. The coach with the good eye is not necessarily a good team manager. Pini it has failed. On the track he could play to its strengths too little, as manager, he is probably inappropriate.

The risk with slalom coach Finance
Hard to understand decisions provided for repeatedly shaking his head. About the hiring of Lionel Finance as slalom coach. Some conjured up the evil at once, while others suspected a brilliant move by Pini behind the action. Unfortunately, the disaster occurred: . Despite large expensive effort (summer training in New Zealand) are among the slalom skiers, even after two years of no apparent progress visible Cup level has only just Wendy Holdener, which means that they will be praised in all, though, . from results and technical point of top positions are seconds Though the ice was very thin, ie, talented riders scarce, Pini has retired more or less unzimperliche way riders like Rabea Grand, Aita Camastral or Jessica Pünchera - by giving them simply by the Eider Verl Ingnorieren anhängte or they simply do not go left. That, for example, from the Swiss Ski cadres discarded and private coaching Camastral before the winter is not even allowed to compete for internal secretions, was a poor decision. If you look today, when those drivers are the Pini would prepare for the Olympics in 2014 and compete to make, then Grand, and Camastral Pünchera would queue slalom this team very well.

Pini could all be at home
In October 2010, I told Mauro that he would not muster Rabea Grand for the slalom in Levi, they have made no progress technologically and technically no longer sufficient. Mauro's mouth was made for me the truth. But when I saw what those girls had glaring defects that were in Levi for Swiss ski at the start, because I did not understand the world anymore. When Grand was not enough, he would calm everyone can make at home. Such actions are a target area Pini offered to its leadership team. It began to ferment, Lara Gut was banned for two races, what an imaginative not much, but amateurish communicated punishment was. The sequel is well known: the slalom and giant slalom followed by a sharp slump, not only because of injuries, and . reasonably functioning Speed team fell out Pini with his estimate of the riders Stefan Abplanalp Today is piling up in tatters: away Pini, Abplanalp gone, Finance probably no future, sponsors, the grumbling, drivers who are frustrated. After separation by Maite Nadig 2005 followed by the women a fresh start with Osi Inglin, 2006, after only one year, there was a new beginning under Hugues Ansermoz, 2010, beginning with Mauro Pini, and now under the new beginning ...?

Pini (SUI) OUT

Pini fired Abplanalp - and now drew his own ripcord

By Richard Hegglin

concede the need to Mauro Pini: This decision was wise and is evidence of realism. The women head over left this time, the law of action not the others, but took the issue into their own hands. He tendered his resignation

would have been with this team, it meant for me many exciting challenges and great goals given, can be Pini . quote "But I see myself in the circumstances at the end of this season personally no longer able to pursue this further. I thank you for your cooperation and wish the team all the best." This is the "case Abplanalp," which under peculiar circumstances, dismissed downhill coach, the boss was even pulled into the vortex. regrets Dierk Beisel, head of competitive sport in the Swiss ski in the official announcement of the departure of 47-year-old from Ticino: "We would like to Mauro Pini as head coach of the way up to at least go to the next Olympics. We regret his resignation and wish him well in his future career. " They are nice phrases, which are for decency's sake gives employees the way that you are happy to get rid of . Beisel says though: ".. We have spoken Pini already in Schladming confidence and led in the last days good conversation going, he wanted to" Its justification "given the circumstances," let's open a lot of interpretations. In truth, crying, hardly anyone Pini for crocodile tears Despite its undoubted qualities as a technical trainer. But he was wrong in the function. When he was hired two years ago, the commitment seemed reasonable, even if it caused some head shaking. For the Swiss Ski president in particular, the pressure was Pirmin Zurbriggen wanted to set new standards in the technical disciplines - an honorable intention. Jump that Hugues Ansermoz as head of the blade had, caused less understanding, especially as he had done with his crew seven-speed riders from podium - as many as in 1989 at the times of Michela Figini and Maria Walliser not. the shadow Ansermoz Pini was never really going on. Now must end Swiss ski season looking for two executives, in a market that is pretty dried up. "We are looking for a first boss," says sports chief power Beisel's approach, "this must then determine the downhill coach, for the offering with Daniele Petrini, an internal solution." Petrini was hierarchically (Group Coach of Fabienne Suter and Nadja Kamer) already on the same level as Abplanalp. Its president Urs Lehmann return includes the medium is not enough. You then may continue its business, however, would lose some Swiss ski officials her face. Beisel tends to a Swiss solution "or one who is familiar with the Swiss system." So in theory, foreign coaches come from the Swiss men's team in question. Of those candidates who were contacted a year ago as a possible male boss is no longer up for discussion. Toni Giger, head of the years of ÖSV men, you will get no second cancellation. Patrick Riml, head coach of USA, is probably too close buddy of Abplanalp. And TV co-commentator Michael Bont dismisses re: "Family has changed within one year of nothing but that I am once again become father." And Thomas Stauffer can hardly divest themselves from the German federation. One, the media was never in the conversation, but was already asked repeatedly is Mark Murmann, who has a huge network. The Welsh, former chief of Valais and Figini plus years of U.S. experience and European Cup-ordinator of the FIS is currently director of sport in Crans-Montana, where the successful World Cup races since everything goes haywire. A source said ironically: "As he was taking so ideal for a job at Swiss-Ski ..."

Stefan Abplanalp will coach in Scandinavia!

Just over a month after it had set Swiss ski out the door without style, Stefan Abplanalp agreed with the Norwegian Ski Federation on an engagement as responsible for the disciplines of downhill and super-G at the women. The 38-year-old Bernese Oberland will coach in his new role, not only Norwegians, but also two or three Swedes.

The Nordic co-operation results in a group with considerable potential. The World Cup Lotte Smiseth Sejersted already established a year ago in Crans-Montana Junior World Champion in downhill, is regarded as rough diamond. Knocking back the 21-year-olds with the 19-year-old Ragnhild Mowinckel (giant slalom and combined) and the 18-year-old Annie Winquist (Super G), two current junior world champions at the door, which brought in the next winter, the European Cup at the World Cup should be.

The Swedish Association brings two or three riders to the partnership: Jessica Lindell-Vikarby (2, which three years ago in Cortina d'Ampezzo, a World Cup super-G win, Kajsa Kling (23) and possibly Sara Hector (19) . The latter was in Crans-Montana Junior World Champion Giant Slalom. The framework should provide for the time being Sejersted, Lindell-Vikarby and Kling.

Abplanalp is the Norwegian Association on the payroll. Of the three other coaches of his team is a Norwegian, two controls from the Swedish Association. Abplanalp, the negotiations last week in Schladming, and finally led from Switzerland, will be traveling in mid-April for a month to Norway to become familiar with the events team and the familiar.

As the mother of his partner Tanja Frieden (Olympic snowboarding champion from 2006) Norwegian is, has Abplanalp a special reference to his new professional home. "something Viking influence is there, and a trace of patriotism, I also need" , Abplanalp said with a wink. He would have had options for the Americans and the Canadians. Its specificity Patrick Riml (NC) is Director of the U.S. Alpine Association, the Western Swiss Hugues Ansermoz, his former boss at Swiss ski, head coach of the Canadians.

Feuz from Salomon to Head

Si. Beat Feuz occurs more and more in the footsteps of Didier Cuche. The Emmental replaced with a two-year contract for Head ski company, the long-term supplier of the new burgers.

Feuz will financially benefit from being in the Vorarlberg by the resignation of several hundred thousand francs Cuche have leaked. Which service will take care of the future husband to Feuz is an open question. One option seems to be that of Bruno Berner Oberland Inniger his charge of Salomon's Head follows.

Head maintains led by the Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal and Kjetil Jansrud, the American Ted Ligety, Bode Miller and Lindsey Vonn and Riesch of Germany Maria Höfl-a top-class ensemble. APA. The German ski double Olympic champion Maria Riesch Höfl-wrote a second book. It wants the 27-year-old bill with some critics. Especially because, according Riesch "malicious" statements like that they'll controlled by her manager and husband Marcus Höfl. According to Riesch of this image was "the biggest rubbish."

Höfl-Riesch won the year before the World Cup overall standings, and then decreased sharply during the past winter, celebrated only three wins. Her first book, "Departed" was published in 2008.

Austrian Nationals, A Time Of Transition

The last time a nation other than Austria won the Nations Cup was in March of 1989, the same month this season's champion, Marcel Hirscher, was born.

There are many reasons for this dominance and far more opinions as to what those reasons are, but the numbers say this country - a little bigger than the state of Maine and smaller than Indiana - won its' 22nd straight Nations Cup title by 6,769pts, more than double that of any other nation save Italy which got second with 6,907pts.

And this was in a season of transition without some of its (retired) biggest stars from the first decade of the century. For a hint at what we can expect from this powerful program going forward, take a look at its National Championships. What we see indicates the Austrian program is a long, long way from losing its grip on the Nations Cup.

In GS the men's title went to 27 year old Christoph Noesig and the women's GS crown to Stefanie Koehle (26) with veteran Nicole Hosp (2 in second. But just under those racers are where the future lies. Second among men was Marcel Mathis, age 20 with a couple of World Cup podiums already in his pocket. Third went to Bernhard Graf (23). Third in the women's GS went to German Veronique Hronek (who is 20) and the next three Austrians were 21 or less with fifth finishing Ricarda Hasser a blushing 18.

Men's slalom appears to be a weak link (Hirscher did not race) as there were two Czechs' and a Croatian among the top four with the 33 year old Mario Matt - in second - the only Austrian in contention for the win. But the second, third and fourth Austrian finishers were Manuel Feller (19), Magnus Walch (20) and Paul Zimmermann (19). Twenty-one year old Jessica Depauli won the women's slalom ahead of Carmen Thalmann (23). The average age of the top 10 was 21.7 and that includes two 26 year olds.

In the super G's where 32 year old Hannes Reichelt and Koehle got the wins we see the rising stars making marks. Otmar Striedinger, 21 was second a hundredths of a second behind Reichelt and 20 year old Vincent Kriechmayr was a half second behind Kroell's sixth place finish. Mirjam Puchner, 20, was second behind Koehle with Tamara Tippler (21) third, Nicole Schmidhofer (23) fourth and Corneila Huetter (19) fifth. Again, average age of the top 10 was 20.8.

Even in men's downhill we saw Max Franz, at 23, taking the win ahead of World Cup DH champ Klaus Kroell with 22 year old Matthias Mayer in third. The women's downhill was canceled by thunderstorms and has been rescheduled early next week with national junior championships slated between.

Swiss Miss new coach???

Quote:
Women's Minister: Hans Flatscher in the wings!

Mario Rall

is the new women's leader and successor of Mauro Pini in the wings: Hans Flatscher, the coach of the Swiss men's downhill. . Lacking only the start of Swiss Ski

"The job appeals to me," says the married Sonja Nef Austrians, "even if I until a few days, no thought was wasted on it." A few days ago: No sooner was announced that Mauro Pini has resigned, got Flatscher of Swiss Ski query already. "Then I started thinking," says Hans, "and the more I think about the job, the more it irritates me. I am now twelve years since coach group, there can not harm it, if we turn to another task. " ie task Other: Less snow, more office. Less coach, more managers. Is advised that the women's team badly disheveled, and after injury, and coach-theater out of joint, for Flatscher makes just the thrill of the new jobs. "It needs fresh, new ideas, it would be a great challenge. Only one to sit made nest would not be exciting. " Still missing the signature and the okay from Swiss ski. "There must be a couple of things are regulated," says Hans, without going into details. One thing is clear: He will change a lot. "Some positions need to be thinking about, just go on as before, probably does not much . On the other hand, I would not tear down all the same, but pay attention to what fits and what does not. " Flatscher (44) is in a relationship for 17 years with Sonja Nef (39) and married in the summer of 2011. Together they have five daughters, Sophia and Anna (4). Hans Flatscher was departing coach in Germany, before the group in 2004, the then head of sport performance for Swiss Ski Gian Gilli won. John has trained in his career but not only men, but as of 1995 in Austria and the ladies on the stage of European Cup. And at the first European Cup races he has learned to like to know a Swiss woman -. Sonja Nef "So I have had good experiences with women in ski racing" , Hans laughs when he is asked about the delicate task that await him at Swiss Ski would.

Michael Bont: Hoping to chance
is not a concept...

In the men won Kitzbühel, Wengen and won many other races speed to whatever you want there's more!?

In the women's five podiums in the speed disciplines is also quite ok! But it hurts pretty hefty, if, in the last four races at the World Cup finals (two giant slaloms and two slaloms) of twelve podiums which are seven in Austria and will be obtained even by seven (!) Different athletes. I think it needs no further analysis to identify the scope of this debacle! The head coach sees the long, and it will spin right in the head! Osi Inglin has said at a press conference in Schladming very clear words and deeds do not need it! It is a mega site, the Swiss ski has to help out. A site as large as I have met in Sochi. Enormous and complex. But I am sure that disappeared in the Sochi Olympic construction sites to be replaced by 2014 and finished works ... For a head coach who is constantly traveling and mainly deal with the tip of the iceberg must, it is almost impossible these problems " to tackle on its own. " Our riders in the Youth Organization (IO) are internationally not so dissimilar, even in the first year is somewhat FIS there. The crux of the problem begins but no later then! I wonder if the structures of the National Leistungszentreten (NLZ) above or to the time. Their tasks more votes? Or would it be time to make this something different? The young athletes are selected very early and forced into a schema. When a young man does not at this age the selections met, he usually falls off the stage of elite sport and is gone. Or the young drivers and riders looking to succeed in the new disciplines of skiing (ski cross, freestyle, etc.). The bottleneck in this "critical" age in my opinion is too narrow. It takes a lot of patience in this phase, often in the development of young people. In addition to professional sports and work / school is a young man at this age also in search of identity. Factors that must also have the next top sports court. It's been yet, the mega-talent. They often make their way up to the World Cup. In Switzerland, one can not rely on this talent, so think of the random and lucky coincidences would keep us afloat. It is important to recognize that at the interfaces of JO to Junior World Cup and European Cup to not only the results of the the only truth. This play also athletic and personal development an important role. A young athlete needs at this age is high degree of assertiveness and "ability to suffer." All these properties are not marked for all people in equal measure. If they are that, however, they are great athletes and personalities. Marcel Hirscher Feuz and Bat are the most recent and best examples of this. the technology: it is extremely dynamic and is constantly adapted. The knowledge of a trainer must be large. At the age of 14 to 17 years moving structures are formed and strengthened. When I look at athletes, they often have a deficiency in the nuclear motion. They come in the European Cup or even the World Cup and go beyond good and evil! But there are also nations that bring through the tape again and again, many young athletes with a very well-established technique in the major leagues of ski racing. Unfortunately, Switzerland is it only in rare cases! I am aware that the problems are not easy to solve. Swiss ski but must find a key to success. A key that fits the basic structures of the country's sports Switzerland. Maybe you have to try too, by the image of the "Abfahrernation" get away. Downhill and Super-G, only two of the four disciplines. are Marcel Hirscher has proven that you can win as "mere" technicians large ball.

"Happy Cows Come From Switzerland *(SUI) !!!

Quote:
World first: Emmentaler AOC, gecko technology!

Emmentaler Switzerland is in the search for quality improvement in new ways. In close collaboration with the Research Institute ALP Gecko technology has been developed for even more harmonious milk. And that is even better cheese.

Emmental is constantly striving to improve the quality of the award-winning Emmentaler AOC. On the production side, barely room for improvement - but the key ingredient: the milk. For many years, therefore working with the Emmentaler Switzerland Agroscope Liebefeld-Posieux (ALP) together to find ways to improve the quality of the milk and thus the cheese. And now succeeded, which has been researched for long: a more harmonious milk obtained in order to produce an even more tasteful cheese.

The gecko technology
Flies are a major stress factor for cows they do buzz around their heads, so the cows react with nervous defensive movements. This affects the milk in two ways: the additional stress leads to a reduction in milk quality, in addition, the milk from the udder defense motions moved in more. The result is that the microstructures of the milk to be changed. Right here is common among long-ripened cheeses such as Emmentaler AOC is a potential for improving quality. Accordingly, they searched for a way to free the cows of the annoying flies. The solution:. The Gecko Technology The Gecko technology is as simple as unconventional geckos feed on insects are exposed to the cows. They eat about 20 flies per day and therefore provide for a swift end to the plague of flies. According to Hans-Peter Bachmann, head of the department of dairy products are the results of the first test series worth noting: "The differences in quality of milk are significant and not statistical outliers. All the more astonishing as this takes place in all-natural ingredients "Next supplemented Bachmann." The result is convincing: The Gecko Emmental is because of even more harmonious milk or fine taste. " The Gecko Emmentaler: Negotiations with the retail sector are now included Following the successful testing of the gecko Emmental is now launched. Currently, the gecko-Emmental from Switzerland by customers in the online store are sourced from cheese Emmental. Emmentaler Switzerland, however, hopes for a quick listing of the product Gecko Emmentaler in the retail sector at home and abroad. The negotiations with the retail sector will be included in the coming weeks.

Quote:
Skier Lindsey Vonn got some unwelcome media attention this weekend, and it had nothing to do with the fact she spent more time with Tim Tebow.

ALL-AMERICAN GIRL
Skier Lindsey Vonn is pure gold. Check out her photos.
The Detroit News website reported Sunday that Vonn is facing an IRS bill of more than $1.7 million because of what the agency says are delinquent taxes. According to the report, the IRS filed a tax lien of $1,705,437 against Vonn and her estranged husband, Thomas, on April 2 with the Elko County recorder in Nevada.

Vonn will pay up, she told the newspaper.

“It is no secret that my last year off the mountain has been filled with many personal challenges,” Vonn wrote to the newspaper in an email. “This matter was only recently brought to my attention, and I took immediate and deliberate steps to remedy the situation. I have made arrangements to pay in full the balance due.”

Vonn, 27, announced in November that she and Thomas had started divorce proceedings. The gossip sites quickly paired Vonn and Tebow, then the Denver Broncos' quarterback, though both parties described their relationship as a friendship.

Tebow has since been traded to the New York Jets. Vonn attended his charity golf tournament Saturday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Vonn finished No. 1 overall on the World Cup circuit for Alpine skiing, which completed its season last month, and also topped the downhill and giant-slalom rankings. It was her fourth overall title.

She earned $608,000 in competition last season, the News reported. A crossover star with wide appeal, Vonn also has endorsement deals with Rolex, Procter and Gamble, Red Bull and Under Armour.

Season Review with Günter Hujara

The men's Chief Race Director Alpine Skiing Günter Hujara evaluated the past 2011/12 season.

Looking back...

Günter Hujara: The season had a difficult beginning due to late arrival of the snow and then continuing instability of the weather. There was nothing we could do to save the Munich City Event for example with unseasonal temperatures around +16C and rain during Christmas. January, February continued to be challenging with varying conditions but then we could enjoy almost summerlike Finals in Schladming.

The continuing fight for the overall title showed that there is a good balance of events on the men's World Cup program. With Marcel Hirscher and Beat Feuz we had a speed specialist fighting a tech specialist for the large globe. I was also very happy to see younger racers such as Alexis Pinturault, having the technical skills to establish themselves on the top of the rankings.

Our highly professional Organizers continue to work on refining the details and are now at the level of being able to focus on optimizing internal processes that are not even visible to the outside. This is the result of consistent work and cooperation over the years. And it is thanks to this foundation that we were in a position to welcome a brand-new Organizer, Sochi, on the tour this season at an impressively high level from the very beginning.

On the new ski regulations...

Günter Hujara: The positive feedback that we have received from athletes who have tested the new skis so far confirms the foundation of the new specifications. As opposed to some initial fears, the new skis are very skiable. We surely will not see images from "40 years ago" at the upcoming Season Opening in Sölden.

The decision-making process on the new specifications was based on knowledge of the injury mechanisms of the past years and sought to reduce the aggressiveness of the skis. The tests conducted so far confirm that the new skis are decisively less aggressive and substantially better controllable. Obviously there are changes in the behavior of the skis in the beginning of the curve. But the current feedback makes us feel confident that we are heading in the right direction.

Through additional changes in course-setting and course preparation we already managed to reduce the average speeds in this season's World Cup significantly and will continue to focus on this in all weather conditions. All these developments are carefully followed and analyzed through the FIS Injury Surveillance System program.

Future focus areas...

Günter Hujara: The 2012/13 season has considerable lower number of competitions planned because it became excessively clear this season that the calendar was too full. There was no space to react to poor weather or other challenges. The travel component, in terms of both time and money, has become a limiting factor, in particular regarding equipment transport. We especially saw this in the case of the Moscow City Event. We will plan 2-3 City Events in the future to continue to bring skiing to the main metropolis of the world, but their timing must be carefully considered and optimized for travel purposes.

Integral to the discussion related to the City Events is the question of core events in the World Cup schedule, which also concerns the super combined. The future calendar drafts no longer include super combined as a Cup with its own globe but the discussion on the repercussions of this, such as management of the World Cup Starting List for the super combined title events, will need to be clarified in the upcoming weeks until the FIS Congress in Korea at the end of May.

We will also continue to work with the Organizers on internal details such as team hospitality, start facilities and other back-office functions.

Super Combined is an ecclectic event I enjoy though many others don't. Keep the globe. I'm still skeptical about the ski change. It will be interesting this season, and interesting to see the result of the new ski's performance this time next year and racer acceptance. I get the feeling that if they are even borderline acceptable to FIS, and injuries levels don't change, they'll declare it a victory, but what about the Junior Racers etc...

There are too few allrounders to make the super combined events exciting. If the value can be increased and more events included, then this discipline would warrant a globe, but not under the current circumstances. 2 events for a globe like on the ladies' side is a joke.

As to the safety issues, I'm really surprised at the conclusions of Mr. Hujara. Less aggressive, really? I don't know anything about the subject, but the reports of some athletes make me feel considerably less confident than Mr. Hujara that this decision was a good one. I am glad to read that course setting and course preparation will be further improved.

I share both Index35 and Renard's skepticism about the changes in the ski length and radius. From what I have read on other sites, several World Cup athletes have already been injured while testing the new skis. That does not sound like "heading in the right direction."

I also agree with Renard about the situation with the super-combined. The amount of races required to earn a globe in super-combined on the women's side (2) is a real travesty. I'd rather see more super-combined races and get rid of the City Events. As Renard also said about the situation with the true all-arounders, there seem to be fewer of them now. Only 4 men scored points in all 5 disciplines last season (Miller, Ligety, Raich, Jansrud).

It`s a good thing that there is no globe for the SC any more. It`s a farce : A Globe for 2 or 3 competitions? Tss. But it`s important to have one super-combined race in a year otherwise they would lose the right to give-away a medal at the olympic games. So it`s good for the racers to have an additional chance for a medal although the significance of a gold medal in the super-combined was NEVER a big one . Ask Ligety who won a gold medal in the super combined - as far as I know - even he is not really fond of that event.
So I`m happy then the super-combined is killed.
This year there have been about 40 races on the tour - that`s too much - I think it`s no pity when there are less races. Maybe sometimes injuries also happen because the racers are tired and can`t give their body a rest ?

To follow-up on what Atomic-Fan said regarding too many races and this is maybe why injuries happen, here is what the all-arounders on the ladies side had to put up with from February 15 which was the first ladies DH training run in Sochi until the last day of the season, March 18 at WC finals in Austria . . . in those 33 days, counting races (12) and DH training runs (5 in all [2 in Sochi, 2 in Bansko, even though the DH race itself at Bansko was cancelled and 1 at WC finals]), they ended up skiing 17 days out of the last 33 days and this was after having already skied two-thirds of the season. Maze skied in every race this season (37), Vonn skied in 36 and Maria skied in 35. And you wonder why the all-arounders are going the way of the dinosaur? By the last race of the season, Maze, Vonn and Riesch all looked like they needed oxygen, they were gassed and their performance showed it. And I didn't even bring up the insane travel involved in that time period, Sochi, Moscow, Bankso and then eventually to Are and then 1 day off before WC finals.

And for next season, just to give an example, the ladies are in Maribor on Jan. 26 and 27 then go to Moscow for the infamous City Event on Jan. 29 and then have to haul all the way back to Austria for World Champs starting with DH training I think on Feb. 4. Ridiculous. People are worried and rightly so about the GS skies, but the schedule in my opinion is just as bad.

Season Review with Atle Skaardal

Atle Skaardal, the Chief Race Director for the ladies' Alpine Skiing, took a moment to reflect on the 2011/12 Audi FIS Ski World Cup season on the ladies' tour.

Looking back...

Atle Skaardal: From a sports perspective the ladies' overall winners in most events may have been decided early on, but we saw some very exciting races. The mixture of classic and new Organizers gave the season its special flair.

From the perspective of the weather, it was a challenging season due to the very wintry conditions all around. Luckily we managed to reschedule all but two events (Munich and Val d'Isère super combined). The loss of the Munich City Event was very unfortunate because it was a great event in 2011 with excellent atmosphere. We then ended the season on a positive note with the fantastic Finals in Schladming, which also served as a very important test event for the World Championships next year.

For me, a positive development this season was that our continuous work in several areas to enhance safety is now bearing fruit. We have been really consequent in managing the speed especially in downhill but also in super-G and giant slalom. The new gate panels are also contributing to improved safety as are our efforts to ensure consistency of course conditions through top level course preparation. Finally, the new helmet specifications too helped increase the awareness of the need for protecting the head.

On future focus areas...

Atle Skaardal: This season presented a true travelling challenge. Besides Sochi, we went to Moscow, Bansko, Andorra and Scandinavia. For me this again raises the question of calendar planning and the importance of making the schedule acceptable and manageable for the racers. We have to be very careful not to overload the calendar and over-expose the racers.

Another focus area for us on the ladies' side continues to be overall promotion and attracting fans and spectators. In addition to the sports part, which typically lasts 1.5 - 2 hours, our events need to offer a full program of entertainment and action. Compared with the men's tour, the ladies' Organizers are under even more pressure as offering a full event program requires a bigger budget which remains a challenge.

@Index, I second that. Hopefully, in the new season, winds won't be such a challenge as they were last season.

The travel schedule is a challenge for the athletes for sure, and the trip from Sochi/Moscow to Bansko was especially tiring if I remember correctly. I'm amazed that only 2 events had to be cancelled for good, despite the ups and downs weather-wise. Good job FIS!

I thought that the FIS did a good job rescheduling early season races that were cancelled. When it gets to a certain point in the season, it's almost impossible to make them up.

I liked having different places, like Andorra, on the schedule. I think that having races in different venues helps to promote the sport better than the City Events.

I actually thinks Val d'isere SC was reschedule in St. moritz. The races that were not reschedule were Bansko Downhill and Sochi SC And Munich city event as well. A challenging season Indeed let's hope for better weather next year.

I was fond of the new ski area in Andorra. Surprising that so many people were there who supported the racers - I didn`t expect that. You could get a glimpse of the great atmosphere even by just watching it on TV .
Also in Bulgaria you could feel it that they really wanted to have the competition there.

US team refines coaching structure

Wednesday 16 May 2012

The U.S. men's team has added Andreas Evers, Bernd Brunner and former World Cup athlete TJ Lanning to its coaching staff for the upcoming World Cup and World Championship season. Evers, who will lead the men's speed program, brings 17 years of World Cup experience and was previously at the helm of the highly successful Austrian men's downhill team. Brunner also joins the U.S. Ski Team from Austria where he had coached for 15 seasons. He will serve as the head coach for a newly formed World Cup B training group. Lanning, who was one of the most heralded juniors of the past decade, saw multiple World Cup top 10 finishes before injuries forced him to step aside from racing. He will now bring his unique eye to the men's speed program with Evers. All three new coaches were on snow with the team during their first camp of the preparation period which wrapped May 13 at Mammoth Mountain, CA.

On the ladies' side the US team has added a multi discipline program in order to continue to support and improve the high performance of Olympic medalists Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso across all Audi FIS Alpine World Cup events . Coaches Jeff Fergus will work directly with Vonn, while Chris Knight will continue to focus on Mancuso. Chip White will continue to lead the top performing ladies' speed team whilst Roland Pfeifer returns for another year at the head of a technical program. Additionally, the Europa Cup team and Development Teams train together with Trevor Wagner focusing on speed disciplines and Seth McCadam responsible for the technical side.

How The New US Men's Program Is Going To Work

The new set-up and staffing of the US alpine national team is unique and considerably different than traditional team arrangements. It is designed to work immediately with a veteran speed team and to also allow development, at a very high level, among a decidedly younger technical squad.

Head men's coach Sasha Rearick got exactly who he wanted to staff this complex system, starting with Austrian coaching star Andreas Evers.

“Any time there was a difficult situation, poor conditions or a bad course set, or anything where coaches got nervous about something; where the coaches got riled up, as a young head coach I looked around to others to see what they were doing,” says Rearick. “What I learned was to go to Andi, and you had to go to him because he's not that vocal. He would very calmly say 'Yes, this is difficult our athletes need to do this' - or - 'That's not safe we should not let them run.' He has such a manner and is so calm. I would gain in 10 seconds absolute belief the situation would work out the way he said it would. ... and it always did. He has tremendous respect from other coaches and from myself.”

Evers handled the purportedly tricky Austrian men's downhill group for years. “You have to work with each guy,” he explains. You know, I was dealing with older guys in Austria; different guys. Everyone is special. You have to work as a team, but you have to work with each of the guys. Everyone goes (races) by himself... and that's what I did. Everyone is special. You learn a lot of things if you work with each as an individual.”

He's not spent a ton of time with the U.S. racers yet, but he has seen enough to have developed a plan. “I think we can do more. I see we have work to do on everything, on technique, on material, everything. There are so many little things you have to do to compete for the Cup. We start to do them now.”

There will be a focus on quality versus quantity and he will insist on racers being fully concentrated on every run. “The guys have to learn this, to be always very concentrated on what we do. But my first step is to bring them all back healthy.”

“Andreas Evers, he's really really good,” says Rearick. “He has experience with a high level of athlete. He has a feeling for speed in skiing. He brings some different ideas, a different focus than what we've been doing. We've focused on dynamic skiing. He brings in a different perspective on that.”

There is that one drawback. “Andi is not a very vocal guy,” said Rearick, and he knew a spark was important, maybe especially with American men. The solution was right in front of him: TJ Lanning.

Never one to shy away from speaking his mind at team meetings and perfectly willing to call out a teammate he felt might have backed off, Lanning was struggling mightily to return from injury. Shifting gears to the coaching side seemed like a natural fit.

“It is, for sure, a change of pace,” says Lanning. “The bottom line is I like skiing too much to give it up.” His biggest concern was if “my peers,” would be supportive in his new more authoritative role. Through the first camp at Mammoth Mountain, that is not a problem.

Lanning says he is excited to see how the team responds not just to him, but to the whole change over. “The whole staff change, I think, is going to help us turn things around,” he says. “Evers knows more about downhill than anyone out there, but he's very simple.”

Lanning says there are a myriad of little things that can create a lot of speed. Evers, he says, “will keep us from going off on tangents. Americans tend to do that.”

For his part, Lanning is more than ready to lend his voice if the situation warrants. “I won't be afraid to call them out. Hopefully when I say 'just stick it in there', they will. I think it's a little different to hear from someone who has been there.”

“The two (Evers and Lanning) together creates a balance,” says Rearick. “TJ puts some spark in the program which is important. He brings the athlete perspective to the coaching staff. He knows what it's like to be there. TJ will be critical in that part.”

“The guys, I see they want to work with me,” said Evers. “It is good to have TJ on board. He has to learn as a coach now, but I think this can be a good thing to push the guys. ... I am here, now, to learn, to get to the mind and see how these guys are working in the mind. That's what I try to understand. From what I saw of TJ, we spoke the same language,” and he laughs, for English is clearly not his first language and he explains he communicates better when his hands can be seen. “On skiing. He thinks on the same page.”

The other side, and more strikingly different, of the US men's program for 2013 and beyond is the position Bernd Brunner, also an Austrian, was brought in to head up.

“The idea was - Sasha's idea was - that some guys should have possibilities to train with the big guns - with (Ted) Ligety - but all the same they need to have their possibilities to train well so they can perform at a high level,” says Brunner. “It's tough to come into the World Cup. It is not so easy to perform well all the time. They have to go back and forth between the World Cup and the Europa Cup or NorAms until they have reached the top 20 or so. It is always tough to make a program for those guys.”

In Brunner, Rearick thinks he's got the right guy to oversee such a back and forth strategy. “Brunner reads people unbelievably well. He reads thoughts and emotions and knows when to push and when to lay off. That's the same quality that makes Forest Carey such a great coach. He (Brunner) also has a foundation of fundamental skiing. He can challenge the young guys to develop skills in so many ways. He brings that feel of balance with creative challenges. He is going to bring diverse ways to get better results.”

It will take a huge effort just in terms of logistics. Asked point blank if it can succeed, Brunner answers without hesitation: “I think so, for sure. It will be a matter of time. There are always injuries and stuff like that (to overcome).” He says the preparation plan is identical to that of the World Cup tech team. “It really looks like a good bunch. If we work all together then we can really push each other. If the coaches, athletes, everybody feels really interested than we can make the next step. We can do it in one or two years.”

Cut From US Team, McJames And Duke Form Own Team

It is part of sport that some folks don't make the team. In ski racing it can be a little more complicated. As Megan McJames and Hailey Duke have learned, in skiing it is possible to get cut without losing your international status. McJames is still ranked among the best 100 women GS racers in the world. Duke is ranked 69th best world wide in slalom. Both own guaranteed starts in next season's World Cup.

But their trend was bothersome to the US Team. Two seasons ago, before injury, McJames was among the top 50 and in 2009 she cracked the top 30. Similarly, Duke, too, was inside the top 30 during the 2009 season in slalom.

Cut-off from pursuing their dreams the two, along with University of Colorado standout Katie Hartman and junior racer Lena Andrews have formed “Independent Ski Racing,” to help raise funds and maintain the level of training required to continue their pursuit.

“After being cut from the national team this spring, Hailey Duke and I are heading a new team and are excited to be able to build and customize the ideal training environment to reach the peak of our careers next season.” says McJames. “We are fundraising together in order to cover equipment expenses and the logistical expenses associated with preparing for and following the World Cup cricuit next season and are calling it The Athlete Project.”

As the winner of the 2012 NorAm Cup GS title, McJames earned a guaranteed start in World Cup GS races next season. Duke was third in the slalom standings and also earned a guaranteed start spot.

“I felt that after working so hard to earn my own spot for the 2012-13 giant slalom World Cup season that I deserved to take advantage,” says McJames. “I believe my best turns are still to be made and was therefore motivated to build a program that provided me with the resources necessary to be able to compete with the best skiers in the world.”

“... I was able to pull myself up by my boot buckles and seek out what I needed to get my skiing back on track,” writes Duke. “In spite of these efforts I have been cut from the National Team and will receive no support from them for next season. Not many people have their own World Cup spots and are left to get there entirely on their own, which is why this is such a unique opportunity. Megan and I now have the chance to design and carryout the program as we see fit, together. ... Our goals, this season, are to race the 2012-13 World Cup season and make our way into the top 20 on our respective disciplines.”

Independent Ski Racing, affiliated with the Aspen Valley Ski Club, will be hiring it's own coach and technician and is developing it's own fitness regime. The team has a Facebook presence: https://www.facebook.com/IndependentSkiRacing and both McJames and Duke invite interested parties in contacting their individual websites: meganmcjames.wordpress.com and haileyduke.com
