On the way to and from Okemo (11/5/02) I had some great views of Magic. There was snow on the trails (mostly upper sections), and some looked like they had more cover than others.
Does anyone know if they've started blowing snow at Magic?
They haven't blown but the trails have been freshly cut to allow earlier openings with less snow. One of the causes of the additional coverage can probably be atributed to a little thing called "magic!"[addsig]
Glad to see that Magic has cut some of the trails this year. A few stumps and some pucker brush are fun, but to keep Magic commercially viable the cutting/mowing was needed.
Magic doesn't blow much snow usually on only a handful of trails and that is usually in December. The snow making system doesn't have much in the way of compressors from what I have seen and was told the snow making ponds need to have a lot of silt removed from them to boost capacity.
I usually just make an offering to Ullr and hope for a snowy year so Master Magician will be skiable.[addsig]

The far right side where the glade is has always been skiable when I've been there. The trail that I've had the worst puckerbrush issues on is the lower half Lucifer, where it's really wide. There isn't as much puckerbrush as some other trails but the stuff that's there is tougher, probably due to prolific sun exposure by comparison to other runs on the hill.[addsig]
MM out of curiosity which glade? One of the two on the map or one of the unmarked glades?
A couple of years ago Magic asked season pass holders to help clear brush. I was on the work party that cleared Broom Stick and Master Magician. It was fun, got a free day lift ticket and took off with a couple of guys to develop a private glade. The glade was never completed, so just 'ends' and requires a traverse out to a cut trail.
I really like skiing Magic: fun trails, easy going patrol, cheap and close. I have heard they are supposed to increase their snow making efforts this year. I hope they calm down on the grooming. The first couple of years grooming was confined to shoveling the lodge steps and plowing the lots. Last year they groomed trails that should have been left alone. The half and half grooming on some of the lower trails is a nice compromise.[addsig]
I didnt mean a secret stash. I meant the row of trees about 15' wide on skiers right of Master Magician. It's part of the trail as far as I can see. It's not deep tree skiing, more like a slightly more open twilight zne, just a few trees to protect the snow. There's no puckerbrush in that spot, and it's just a little steeper than the rest of the trail.[addsig]
I know those trees pretty well as I cut of some of the lower branches of the conifers that make up that stand on that brush clearing day a couple of years ago. You are correct that snow holds better there than other parts of the trail.[addsig]
I only skied there once many moons ago on a sketchy day, so obviously, I didn't see all those goodies you guys are talking about, or I would have been back. I have driven by in the summer, and have seen some interesting things near the top- maybe I'll scope it out this year. The only thing that really bugs me about MRG's snowboard ban is that I don't get to ride some of those amazing bootleg runs. I'd love to find some similar terrain where my red-white-and-blue powder seeking missile can be employed.[addsig]
