Noticed that Stowe is up to 89 bucks peak periods - yikes!

I predict we'll see $100 by 2015, though they may tend to hold at 99 for a while...

When you take into account all the discount lift ticket options....season passes, discount cards, skiclubs, industry tiks, ski/lodging packages, off-site tiks, resort promotions and other discounts, a small % of the skiers/riders today pay the retail window rate. Like other businesses they are trying to build brand loyalty and high retail window rates helps to drive that goal.

Comparing costs with theater, concerts and golf; skiing is still IMHO a better value.

Now I remember, ca. 1970 the hoopla when lift tickets hit the horrific price of $10. Doing the math, in 2050, there will be similar hand wringing when the price of lift tickets hits $1000!!!!

A majority of the destination skiers/riders fly in JH Airport, a few do the SLC and IF airports, stay 5-7 days and all have heavily discounted ski/lodging packages. Excluding the wealthy guest and the totally clueless, very few end up paying that price.

I don't agree with that one. Raising prices never wins you more customers or make your existing ones happier but if they are willing to continue paying those prices then the resorts are compeled to find out where the ceiling is. It's called supply and demand.

If you want to ski, look for two-fers and freebies are available. Season passes are cheap per day - and are especially cheap at smaller areas.

Skiing has always been expensive - nothing new here. If you really want to ski, you'll find a way!

As mentioned, most customers don't pay the high window prices as there are many options. If someone decides to beat the high prices by getting a seasons pass, for example, then the resort gets a regular customer for the season. If they exceed the customers expecations maybe a customer for life.

This thread over at Alpinezone gives ya a bunch of cheaper options, deals and promotions

Whew! I won't be paying for tickets at the window any more. More areas are beginning to offer specials via their Website too. I rarely ski on a weekend day, and with my Jiminy pass will ski there 99% of the time. Also, skiing solo is harder these days due to lift ticket and gas prices. Paying window price for a lift ticket a day at Killington is over $100. for me.

Whoa nelly. You're assuming someone wants to ski the same place lots of times. Buying a season pass can also be a huge waste of money if you don't go often enough.

My sister & brother-in-law live there. They just purchased 20 day passes for $1,200. It is better than $91 a day, but far from what I'd call a great deal!!!

What're Aspen and Vail this year? They were up there at $92.00 last year (but Vail did have a good Pass deal).

There are a good number of ski areas that have enough vertical to keep things interesting that are still less than $40 even on weekends, such as Dartmouth Skiway and Black Mountain.

There are also areas for under $15 (!) for a full weekend day, such as Northeast Slopes, VT and Mt. Prospect, NH.

Last year I was able to ski 4 areas in 4 days Sat-Tue for about $60 American - NE Slopes, Mont Joye, Quebec, Owls Head, Quebec, and Balsams Wilderness.

IMHO $60/day vs $91 is a fantastic deal

Most people who buy a seasons pass do plan on skiing at that resort often. That's why they buy one. They are not as dumb as you presume.

Another benefit for the resort with Season Passe holders is the additional money spent while at the area. A friend who has family passes said he often spends over $60. for food when he goes with the family; several times a year. When he skis solo, he likes to stop and get a hot chocolate in Christianson's when he knows it would cost $1.50 at Cumby's.

Me? I buy my Chocolate Chip cookie and Nestle's Crunch bar at Cumby's before skiing, and have my hot chocolate when I get home. Hey! I'm a Scotsman...

66 Hours Skiing last season came to an average of $14. an hour and that comes to about $3.00 a run at 5 runs per hour. Not bad. I want to get that down to a $1.00 or less per run this season! lol

Wait until everyone's 'hero' barack obama starts his cap and trade legislation. At that point lift tickets will most likely approach 125-$150 per day due to the massive energy consumption and carbon contribution of ski areas.

I think that it just matters how much you want to ski. I live in Vermont to ski, so I do alot and for a little money. Even with a trip to Utah and 10 different resorts I still think that I spent less than 5 dollars a day skiing .

Ummmm.......Steamboat.....$95 a day....every day.......and almost no discounts. Ouch! We're headed to CO for February vacation and the kids are in 5th and 6th grade so skiing for them will be almost free. I'll probably buy a Copper Mt pass that comes with (6) unrestricted days at Steamboat for $469.......cheaper than day tickets. We'll ski Steamboat for four days and then go to Copper.
