Coming from NY, went up Rte 2 from North Adams. The Hairpin Turn was in awful, awful shape due to some snow the night before. Just enough snow that the road was covered at the turn. Its tricky going around it. Its got a good grade, and your speed is reduced to 15 mph going around it. You lose traction, and it was a lot of sliding to get past it. Not fun.
Anyways, the skiing was great! 100% open, firm groomed packed powder - the kind you get when it was 40 the day before, and then it dries out and becomes a bit harder the next day. Stayed on the steep groomed trails early, like Umass, Competition, Flying Cloud for some high speed cruising. As always, I love the skier's right of the mountain for the fun dips, chutes, and meandering trails.
They turned on the high speed double near lunchtime, which dispersed the crowds from the triple. That is one crazy double! I think the line speed is 650'/min, or something close to it. You can get a lot more runs on this lift which still allows you to access most of the mountain.
The area was filled to a comfortable capacity. Short lift lines, full lodge, but not crowded.
Met a lot of skiers on the chair who were skiing there for the first time, that they had heard good things about the mountain. All were glad they came.
As always, I recommend Berkshire East to anyone. Its a fun mountain that has something for everybody, and skis a lot bigger than its 1000 vertical feet.
Glad you had a good day at the Beast. You advertised so did any other Nelsapers show up? Any pictures? We had a good day with the southern contingent in December. Most of us were looking forward to a day to meet with some our northern friends. keep us informed if anything else is coming up. Willing to travel after the race season ends.
I skied there wed and had a great day. I would recomend checking out the website for great discount deals mid week. It was mass. day so I skied for $20. The area really is a gem.
Jeremy, sorry I couldn't hookup with you Sat. I had duty Friday Night and then on Sunday. Glad to hear that you had a good time and hopefully you can run another NELSAP Day at another area so I can meet up with you again.
4aprice - didn't take any pics, forgot my camera - d'oh! There were 3 others who were likely to come, but didn't see them at 10. Perhaps they got their late.
Beastpatroller - we might be able to do another NELSAP day at some point this winter. Will let you know for sure.
