Killington’s trick or treat - Slopes open Sunday
11:56 a.m.
October 31, 2008
Staff Report
Killington Resort has announced its own treat this Halloween.
The slopes will open for skiers and boarders Sunday, two weeks earlier than planned.
Communications Manager Tom Horrocks said the resort is opening as a result of a massive snowmaking effort by resort employees over the past couple days with freezing or near-freezing temperatures resulting in snow coverage sufficient for good skiing and riding.
Horrocks said Killington Peak received 10 inches of snow Tuesday and Wednesday. The ski area started making snow early Tuesday morning.
For an up to the minute snow report and information on the resort’s opening, see www.killington.com.

With 11 inches of new snow this week, cold temperatures, Killington's elevation advantage and the power of the World's Most Extensive Snowmaking System, we're kicking off the 2008/09 ski and snowboard season on Sunday at 10 a.m.
We'll offer top-to-bottom skiing and riding off the K-1 Express Gondola and the Northridge Triple, serving the following trails: Great Northern, Rime, Reason, Upper East Fall, Middle Chute and Lower Bunny Buster. No beginner terrain will be available!
Have a season pass at another OPEN New England resort? We'll take $15 off the price of a daily ticket for season pass holders from any resort that is OPEN with lifts operating in New England! Present your pass and a valid ID at the K-1 ticket window to receive the discount.
Been there, done that, in late October or early November at Kmart. It ain't gonna be worth $65 with that mob scene. That is an outrageous price for limited terrain.

...and that's why so many areas don't bother with early season
i was thinking of going if it was going to be 39bucks, but 65? I'll be watching football and avoiding the crowded knacker filled streets of kmart
What a complete ripoff...just got off SR website although 1 trail still 25bucks, at least they're reasonable...
I think they are justified in charging full price if they deem that necessary. Think about it - they have to bring on staff, they're making a heck of a lot of snow that will likely melt before the season starts, etc.
If anything, charging a high price is a service to season pass holders, because if it's indeed too high, it'll keep the 'knacker filled streets of kmart' uncrowded.
I couldn't find it on K's site - is this just open for the weekend or are they going to be open mid-week? $65 might be worth the drive on Tuesday for me! What hours are they open?

completely agree, however, how does that benefit me?!
The benefit is that, if it's really worth it to you, you can ski well before Thanksgiving.
Unfortunately, ski areas have long ago set the bar pretty low for early season and spring skiing - many people feel they are owed a discount for whatever reason. Ironic since early season skiing can cost the ski area more per skier visit than peak season, and since spring skiing is often on near 100% of the terrain with good base depths.
An argument could be made for gouging if they were charging more than their regular ticket price. They aren't. They decided to pour a lot of money into the mountain for early season skiing after listening to all of the whining last year - the reaction may be enough to convince them they were right in the fall of 2007 to not bother.

Doubt it, now can you please just be quiet for once instead of injecting your dribble into an otherwise positive conversation? Your not Greenspan, get over it.

Most participants in SJ have a "pro-skier bias." When he's not writing comedy, , Jeremy (rocket21) IMHO has a strong pro-management bias. That's neither drivel nor negativity unless you feel that anyone who disagrees with you is negative.
Jeremy may not be Greenspan, but he has worked in Ski Area management and has some serious understanding of how the industry works!
I think a couple long bike rides and some weight lifting this weekend are going to do me more good at this point.
Never liked that narrow diagonal trail from halfway down Lower Bunnybuster to the gondi when it had thousands of people on it. But if anyone does go, please post a report (with pix).

I'm not Greenspan and I'm glad - he's been getting a lot of blame for recent economic problems There's no need to get upset. I think they're justified in charging what they want. Would I or will I pay $65 or whatever to ski Killington tomorrow, even if it was only 30 minutes away? No.
