Snow report indicates they are open:

Can't say they are the first in the east as Mt Snow had more than this open a week ago.

I am in Clemson at the moment. I can assure you that it is a heckuva lot colder down here now than when I left Hartford yesterday.
Cataloochee has two short lifts running. Their home page has a webcam option.

First last year as well !!! 4700' base elevation and decent local skier population in Asheville area makes it feasible. Opening early is part of their spin. Fun little place. Go cat!

Looks a lot like that on bad days. Especially the prone skier in the middle of the pic!
Also this: Cat web cam
There is a steep open field to skiers left that opens fora few days every couple of years when there is more than a foot of new snow. The pics from those events are fantastic. Later, I'll look around and see if I can find some.

Cataloochee is "first in the East. (Cataloochee is in NC.)
First in the Northeast/New England depends on what you call, "open".
Many places, including Mt. Snow and MRG have had skiers "earning turns".
If the criterion is tickets, Mt. Snow wins, because they have allowed hiking and are nominally open, but they require a ticket, albeit free.
According to their website, Mt. Snow will be spinning a lift this weekend, so it appears that New England will be a tie between Sunday River and Mt. Snow, unless there is another competitor in the Northeast.
By the way: According to "Snowcountry", Dry Hill in NY has been open. ANybody got data. They may have first-in-the-northeast honors.
