i was wondering lately why the pine hill trail closed to skiing? i know someone died on it but why did it close i know people have died elsewhere on old race trails (even balance rock) but why close that one? its not that steep.
It's outside of the ski area lease area and ends up in the reservation parking lot. It also has a stone staircase going up it, meaning it would require significant snowcover to be skiable now, and since they don't even have snowmaking on Roper's, I doubt they would put it on Pine even if it was open to skiing.
At an area Wachusett's size, you don't have to have hydrants on the trail to be 100% - a few lengths of hose will generally get a few guns on the trail, and pushing will cover it T2B. That is, if they want to. Capacity and actual snowmaking usage are two different things.

Years ago, I confronted a different ski area owner over a similar issue. While he affirmed what rocket21 said, he also quipped, "It's 100% of what is going to have machine made snow."

While they can probably do that on Upper Balance, they don't push it down Roper's Road nor do they ever use hoses to make snow on it, that trail is only open for a short time after a sizable storm.
