The annual Massachusetts Senior Games will be held Feb. 14 at Mt. Wachusett. These are races for men and women 50 and older. Competition is in five-year age groups; i.e. 50 - 54, 55 - 59, 60 - 64, etc. Usually the biggest groups are those in their 60s and 70s, retirees who ski midweek. It's open to anyone in the age groups from any state.
There will be a two-run g.s. on dual parallel courses (one run in each course, fastest combined time wins) and a downhill. The races are on the NASTAR hill, not all that demanding.
The cost is $50, or $25 for season-ticket holders. That gets you a day-long lift ticket, entry into both races, a long-sleeved sweatshirt and usually a lot of fun. There are some pretty good racers who take part. Then there is someone like me, who races just this once each year. I usually get my doors blown off, but, what the hell.
Anyone interested may go on line at www.maseniorgames.org for info on entry forms. If you want to wait until the last minute, you can register at the Mt. Wachusett base lodge from 8 to 9 a.m. the day of the races.
In past years we also have held cross country races at Saima Park in Fitchburg. But with the snow drought that probably isn't going to happen this year.
We also have hockey in March. Age groups for team members are 50 - 59, 60 - 69 and 70 and older. We've had as many as five teams in that oldest age group. Most teams come from Massachusetts, but we get some from Rhode Island and Connecticut, too.
If you're interested, come to Wachusett Feb. 14 and have fun.
(My disclaimer is that for 10 years I was on the Massachusetts Senior Games board of directors and vice chairman for a couple of years. But I've been off the board for a few years now. I let people know about this because I think they'd enjoy it.)
