Now the first of December was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Lord, the Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go
- James Taylor
ED: now I'm going to have that song stuck in my head for the rest of the day...
__________
There's no waiting for friends on a powder day.
How about this one by Sammy Cahn and Julie Stein? It was quite popular years ago and still is heard once and a while.
Song: Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow Lyrics
Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
When we finally kiss goodnight
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm
The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbying
But as long as you love me so
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
I'm not even sure if this is the name of Tom Petty's song and it doesn't have the word snow in it,but when I hear "Into the great wide open"I fill in "WHITE" for "WIDE" and put my mind into a great white expanse of powder filled bowls out west somewhere.Another song that comes to mind if there are any churchgoers out there is "whiter than snow".Then of course there are numerous Christmas songs as Bill mentioned, frosty, etc.
Maybe some oldtimers remember Harper's Bizarre from the 1960s. They recorded a Randy Newman song called "Snow"
Sometimes the wind blows through the trees and I think I hear you calling me But all I see is snow. Fields we used to know and the little park where we would go sleeps far below...in the snow.
Lead singer was Ted Templeman, who later became a producer and discovered a band called Van Halen.

Harry Nilsson recorded a killer (as in outstanding) version of this song - it's a bonus track on the highly recommended "Nilsson Sings Newman" CD.
Snow
It won't be long before we'll all be there with snow
Snow
I want to wash my hands, my face and hair with snow
Snow
I long to clear a path and lift a spade of snow
Snow
Oh, to see a great big man entirely made of snow
Where it's snowing
All winter through
That's where I want to be
Snowball throwing
That's what I'll do
How I'm longing to ski
Through the snow-oh-oh-oh-oh
Those glist'ning houses that seem to be built of snow
Snow
Oh, to see a mountain covered with a quilt of snow
What is Christmas with no snow
No white Christmas with no snow
Snow
I'll soon be there with snow
I'll wash my hair with snow
And with a spade of snow
I'll build a man that's made of snow
I'd love to stay up with you but I recommend a little shuteye
Go to sleep
And dream
Of snow
And to anybody who hasn't seen the film: a lot of it takes place at a ski lodge in the fictional town of Pinetree, Vermont. The song is performed on the train, sung by the four stars of the film (Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen).

Not to be picky... . OK, I'll be picky.
1. The lyrics of this song, e.g., "I long to clear a path and lift a spade of snow...," always made me wonder how many blades the film stars actually lifted in their life. The movie, even this song, are still among my all-time favorites, though. Snow, Christmas, wintertime, love...what more could we want?
2. It doesn't take more than a passing glance at the pines that greet the train-riders to Pinetree Vermont to realize, though, that the train went terribly off course. It dropped its passengers off somewhere in California's Sierra Mountains. Them there sure ain't white pines, Pilgrim. (I guess the script writers decided not to pursue this particular sub-plot opportunity, but it would have made a great Twilight Zone episode.)
Thinking snow
