Alright, I have a research project that I have to do and I have decided to do it on Mount Whittier. I figured this would be one of the easier places to do because in a way it is still open and there is a ton of people here that know about the place. Alright, the three questions i have to answer are:
Why did it close in the first place?
What could have been done to save it?
And the big question, Could it ever reopen as a profitable ski area?

Just search on Whittier plus Forum topic titles. There are at least a dozen threads on Whittier that really beat the subject to death.

And as to the third question, you might compare it to Crotched; it could have similar terrain and a somewhat diffferent market. You'd have to bug Chris for some data on how well Crotched is doing, but Whittier couldn't expect to do any better than that.

What would be needed for Whittier to reopen. Is an expansion onto the backside a possibility? My teacher knows nothing about this place so I could bend the truth a little.

This topic has come up a number of times. If you do a search on this board you should find the threads. The bottom line and general consensus of the wise posters of this board, IIRC, is that Whittier will never reopen as a ski mountain because:
  • It has been closed for such a long time, tons of capital would be needed to bring it up to something useful
  • It has to compete with the North Conway/Jackson area
  • It's not that big a hill and would most likely only get regional skiers

I'm sure there are other reasons, but those are the ones I remember. Though I also predicted that the Red Sox would never beat the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS...

Whittier is too steep and will only offer expert terrain.

I don't know what kind of recourses you have available to you but the SAM (ski area management) archives may have what you are looking for.

Good grief "Sully". Are you lobbying to be president of the United States? You don't need to develop a phony plan for the back-side of the mountain to pass in a report. But if you do, maybe you can shape a trail like Iraq and show a clear cut exit strategy at the bottom of the trail

Unless the teacher specified otherwise, "Chicago Book of Style" has a suggested way to reference internet URLs an articles. The nelsap.org one on Whittier is a great source.

You want to do an interview? Look at the various threads and URLs on Whittier that have been referenced to you earlier on this thread. Many of us have skied there and, I am sure, would be willing to talk to you.
