Felt the call to get one last weekend trip in being it was the last 2 days of the season here at my favorite Mich lower peninsula hill. The forecast was for cold temps( for April) and some fresh snow. Ended up only my middle grandson and I ( other 2 were sick) skiing/ riding with the wife providing verbal support. This was our second time skiing in April.( consecutively)
A week ago they had a foot of fresh here, too bad it fell on Easter wkend and the wife had to work, they had all 53 trails open. Today all snowmaking trails were open(39) and provided a February like surface with no bare spots and very few icy spots if any. Nubs knows how to keep a good surface in challenging times. It doesn’t hurt to have your front side facing the north. East facing Boyne Highlands across the way has been closed for a week already and Boyne Mtn was down to 12 east facing trails.
Most of the colored fixed grips are Riblets but this Poma double with the floater is a unique unit.
One of the highlights of this ski area compared to the Boynes( besides great snowmaking and management/employees) is their glades which were less tree limb/branches/twigs filled than my yard. Although closed today I had to stop on the home run trail coming back from west facing Pintail peak to snap a couple shots of the clean end of the season underbrush of the Tower glades.
In between some heavy snow showers there was enough of brightness on Traverse Bay to snap a shot of Brenny entering the Southern Comfort trail.
Here we were on Sno Pro looking west at east facing and closed Boyne Highlands.
Still like that Yellow colored Riblet( wasn’t running)
Got in 4 hours of skiing/ riding for a great $40 spring rate(8 yr old Brenny free), the crowds were fairly sparse, the snow surface was almost perfect( hats off to Nubs groomers!) and we get to do it all again tommorow!
Took some historic photos after we finished in the lodge(had these on SJ1.0) which I’ll post shortly.
